Is David Podvin Praising Dean on one hand/but accusing me of being a Nazi?
Edited on Mon Sep-22-03 07:48 PM by KoKo01
I've read David Podvins articles and mostly found them to be wonderful. He's on the "Make them Accounable Web Site:...which I think was up before DU....or at about the same time DU came online...because it was one of the first "Liberal Websites" I Bookmarked in those early days after "Selection 2000."

What pissed me off is what he says about me! I protested against the Invasion of Iraq.....and he is calling me a "peace activist who marched while waving Israeli flags that have been defaced with swastikas?"

Are we who marched in protest to be condemned this way......I couldn't believe this article. I was reading along thingkin what good points he was making until this paragraph jumped out and bit my butt! What is this? Has he lost his mind????

On Edit: I never saw anyone in any peace march I was involved with holding an Israeli flag defaced with Swatikas.....and I don't think any one else did either in the huge San Francisco or Washington marches....If you did please tell me! Why would Podvin say this"

Here's a quote:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of exhibiting disdain for Democratic voters, Dean has behaved respectfully by leveling with them.
He has been candid in refusing to be all things to all people. Just as he is persona non grata to the Zell
Miller wing of the party, Dean has taken positions that will disqualify him from gaining the support of
some on the left. He is in favor of leaving gun control up to the states, a position that is viewed with
understandable concern among Democrats who live in the heart of NRA country. He insists on a balanced
budget, which will severely limit the introduction of massive new social programs to help Americans who
are suffering. And he is a strong supporter of Israels right to exist, which is the kiss of death for his
chances among the peace activists who march while waving Israeli flags they have defaced with
swastikas.

1. Did you deface an Israeli flag?
Edited on Mon Sep-22-03 07:45 PM by tjdee
IF not, I don't think he means you.

I think he's talking about a certain segment of protestors...

How'd you do with the hurricane? And what's this, changing your avatar?
:hi:

2. Uh, did you march with a flag like that?
If not, he's probably not talking about you.

3. Eloriel he is lumping the Peace Activists in this article about Dean with
Israeli Flag defaced with Swastika bearing Peace Activists. Did you read the article?

4. BTW just edited my post.....I never saw in any peace protest that I
attended any Israeli flags defaced.....and I've been to probably over 15 of them here in NC including the BIG one.......

I took it as a smear against what "some" are calling the "Angry Left Wing" of the Dem Party....the one's who couldn't get "over it" and are some hippie liberal fringe folks left over from the 60's.

Read the article and tell me why I shouldn't have been totally offended by his comment.....this sounds like "disinformation to me.......and I'm a DEAN SUPPORTER!

5. It's poorly placed hyperbole...
...and having watched the April 20th "anti-war" march, I know exactly what he is talking about. At least the portions the media bothered to cover. I'm sure one of the people he's referring to will soon jump in and demonstrate...

6. There Was a Big March in DC in the Spring of 2002
It was a bewildering variety of groups and messages, including anti-globalization, Anti-aid to Columbia, etc. Organized by those socialist anarchist types (which is fine with me). Lots and lots of Arabs from all over the East coast -- amazing turnout. A lot of it was depicted as anti-war and anti-Bush, which was a common theme.

During the largest march, there was indeed a lot of anti-Israeli sentiment. A lot of equating Sharon to Hitler. Probably some Israeli flags with swastikas. Not representative of all anti-war marches, but it was representative of this one.

This is what Podvin is talking about, and he has a point. Dean's pro-Israel past is a problem to a lot of people in the activist community. But anti-Bush sentiment is so strong that I think it's overstated. Dean himself has started to moderate his pro-AIPAC position.

9. Yes, but he's doing what the media did to us Protestors! Painting with a
brush to suit his purposes......! He is smearing us who told them DO NOT GO INTO IRAQ......

He's lumping us in with some obscure sign he saw......what is this. I'm sick of spending weekends out with signs inhaling gas fumes to be trashed by the Repugs...fellow Americans, the Press and now one of my favorite lib columnists.

We are the people Dean has addressed! The people who said "DO NOT INVADE IRAQ!"

Anyway...it really burns me up....and I took it as a slap down.

Hey Ribo! :hi: Nice to see you on a post......we havent' crossed paths in awhile!

Peace!

7. Koko, Look at the Sentence Again
and he is a strong supporter of Israels right to exist, which is the kiss of death for his chances among the peace activists who march while waving Israeli flags they have defaced with swastikas.

There's no mention of the PROTESTERS being Nazis -- just the fact that they think Israelis are. Podvin actually doesn't express an opinion of these protestors, although he doesn't sound like he's one of them.

There is definitely a contingent of Dean supporters who are anti-Israeli. (I'm one of them, although not as rabid as some.) And Dean's positions on the ME are a stumbling block to some people like this. I don't think it will be quite as important as Podvin thinks.

8. I'm sure Podvin hates her
Edited on Mon Sep-22-03 08:19 PM by MariMayans
He hates Eric Alterman over Israel if that tells you anything. Fuck him anyway, he's not Dean and he isn't terribly important.

on edit: Holy Shit! he went after Linda Gradstein!

http://www.makethemaccountable.com/podvin/more/020417_B...

Gradstein is a paid speaker for Hillel and Friends of Israel

11. Thanks for the link Mari....will check it out. There's something here
important, or I wouldn't have posted what I did. I read what he said carefully....he was painting me in with folks I don't belong with and if he saw what he says he did.....it was one or two folks in a Washington March of thousands and not those of us around the country who are protesting locally.....And, I'm in NC FGS! Never saw any sign like that!

10. I thought that you decided that you couldn't be for Dean because he...
was like Clinton?

Why are all of your questions about Dean designed to turn off at least one constituancy toward him?
