that way, GD would be cleared up of those threads so that we can discuss other issues.

....I take it that Dean is the flavor (or should I say scapegoat) of the month for certain DU-ers?

I mean, this always seems to happen. A hot topic emerges, and GD is flooded with threads on this topic, when only a handful are necessary.

I haven't even looked at the Dean threads yet, but I can guess that they're high on emotion and low on reasoned and respectful debate. I'll bet there's a lot of name-calling as well.

Provocation, anyone? Dean is so well-respected among real Democrats, so where is all the hysteria coming from?

This tactic is getting really old.

23. Key word: BLINDLY
Open your eyes, listen, learn. You don't know him yet.

It has been my CONSISTENT experience that people who bash Dean haven't really studied him. You have to watch his speeches (for example, why not watch what he said at the Take Back America conference? It's up at C-Span, just type in "Dean and Take Back America" to find it.) Or the DNC Executive Committee meeting yesterday on C-Span. Did you watch it? It may be archived on C-Span now, too, or perhaps it will be on the DNC website.

31. That is pretty harsh, I'll admit. We all have the right as progressives
to state our opinions on this board. I guess it is a place to hash out things that need to be hashed out. However, there have been many, many threads that have addressed this issue and there are many DUers that agree with you. Be happy you're not alone. You won't sway those of us that think Dr. Dean is doing the right thing. We won't sway you. Wndycty, you have been here since the beginning, you have many good and positive things to contribute. So do the rest of us. Could we please move on to those things instead of fighting each other over something that we just can't agree on?

39. Thank you for the thoughtful post. . .
. . .my biggest issue as it relates to this current controversy is not Howard Dean, one of my regrets is that I come off as a Dean basher becaue I am quite fond of him, however I resent the fact that many on this board will not tolerate any criticism or questions about him. Going back to the primaries I have always had a problem with this. If you will notice in all of my criticisms I have never said Dean should shut up, go away etc. and most importantly I have never questioned his commitment to progressive ideals so I really resent it when I see people like Biden, Ford, Obama, Richardson, et al get nailed like they have on here. Not that they are above criticism, hell even I have cursed Barack, however in this controversy I feel like they have gotten a raw deal from many DUers and other activists.

Additionally, I feel it should be pointed out that in this instance Howard Dean made a controversial statement (WHICH I AGREE WITH!!!) and he put all Democratic officials in position of having to respond to reporters questions. So criticizing this Dems who are reacting to questions is over reaching.

45. All I'm saying is...
All I'm saying is basically that, even though you may not support Howard Dean all the way, to put energy into being vocal about opposition against him is simply a bad idea. If the people in the Democratic party are spending time bashing Dean, then that will allow the Republicans to take even more control. They WANT to see the Democrats divided so that they can swoop down and take advantage.

I'm sure that if I knew everything about him, there would be things that I don't like too... but to see certain groups of people on here complaining somebody that has not had a chance to prove himself yet and is on the side of the many members of DU a majority of the time is frustrating.

I understand that my original post may have been a bit harsh though... I definitely could have phrased it better. I'm sorry if I offended you or anybody else by it.

46. As much as I've ragged about the DLC one of them stood up for Dean
Over at Daily Kos I read nice comments from Ed Kilgore -

My basic take on Howard Dean's DNC chairmanship is simple. After the 2004 elections, Dean had a choice. It would have been the easiest thing in the world for him to have assumed leadership of an abrasive and divisive faction of the Democratic party, as a proto-candidate for the 2008 presidential nomination. But instead, he chose to pursue the difficult and often thankless job of party chairman, building on the aspects of his 2004 candidacy that virtually all Democats appreciated: small-dollar fundraising, and grass-roots efforts to expand the ranks of party activists. For all my differences of opinion with Dean's 2004 campaign, his self-sacrificing choice afterwards earned my respect, and my loyalty.
Dean's work as party chairman has focused expanding the Democratic base in red states, and that, too, is exactly what I hoped he would do.

Every party chair spends a lot of time speaking to Democratic activists, and inevitably serves up a lot of red meat. Dean's recent "controversial" remarks would have been completely unobjectionable, and probably unnoticed, if they had been uttered by his predecessor.

So I think the media treatment of his remarks is unfair, and moreover, misses the legitimate thrust of his basic argument: the GOP leadership does indeed favor wealth over work, and is indeed divisive and exclusive on issues of culture, ethnicity and religion. Sound-bites aside, Dean is right, and you can count me out of any campaign to get him to resign for saying the right thing in a way that is being wilfully misrepresented.

After seeing this I am considering deleting the DLC comment from my sig line. I'm still thinking....

34. i wasn't a dean supporter
however, i find it all the hoopla over his statements absurd. reminds me of the cynthia mckinney skewering for the crime of telling the truth about bush, inc. why are americans so afraid of the plain, unvarnished truth? bush hasn't worked a day in his life. the GOP touts itself as the party of white, christian america. many people do hate what the GOP stands for. and "i strongly disagee" hasn't been working.
people like an coulter can state that liberals should be killed without so much as a peep from all those offended by dean's comments on the right. same for all the ridiculous, ugly comments make about gays, women, blacks, etc., from the likes of santorum, robertson, lott, etc., etc., etc.

40. How does Dean stick his foot in his mouth? Which statement?
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 04:45 PM by chaumont58
I can understand Cheney bashing Dean, but Biden, Pelosi, Harold Ford? Some posters on this board say Dean is not helping the situation. My question is what situation is he not helping? Who is Governor Dean hurting? He says repukes are white Christians. Just how far off the mark is that statement? What percentage of elected Repukes are not white Christians? When the San Francisco Chronicle reporter wrote about Dean's white Christian statement, she had to go all the way into Southern California into the repuke enclave of SimiValley to find a nonwhite repuke.
I ask this question: who is Governor Dean offending and why?
