"Friedhelm Eronat: 'Briton' named as buyer of Darfur oil rights

Further to next post below, here is a June 10, 2005 report in The Guardian by David Leigh and Adrian Gatton.

A millionaire British businessman, Friedhelm Eronat, was named last night as the purchaser of oil rights in the Darfur region of Sudan, where the regime is accused of war crimes and where millions of tribespeople are alleged to have been forced to flee, amid mass rapes or murders.

The disclosure was greeted with outrage by human rights campaigners. "From a moral point of view these people are paying a government whose senior members may end up in front of the international criminal court for war crimes," Simon Taylor, director of Global Witness, said yesterday."

Bush, Annan discuss Darfur crisis

"President Bush told U.N. Secretary General Koffi Annan the United States supports NATO efforts to help deploy African peacekeepers in southern Sudan.

Spokesman Scott McClellan said the assurance was given in a telephone conversation initiated by the U.N. chief who had just visited Africa.

African nations hope to expand the number of troops in Sudan to as many as 8,000 to try to stop the violence between Sudan's Muslim population in the north and its Christian and animist population in the south.

Hardest hit is the region of Darfur, where an estimated 200,000 people have been killed."
