How will Bush discredit the Downing Street Memo?
It looks like this will finally be Page One news soon; there's so much pressure on the media, it's unlikely it'll just go away. Bush must have a war room set up for this. If the White House sticks to its' pattern, they'll try to discredit the memo somehow. Maybe I'm just not smart or devious enough, but I can't think of anything they can possibly question about it; it's obviously an official memo from an identifiable source, and neither Blair or the White House has disputed it. How do you think they'll go about minimizing the damage?

1. He doesn't need to, CM (corporate media) will just ignore it
...but I presume this is a form of discrediting, "discrediting by dismissal."

Good question.

12. I was about to post the same...discrediting unnecessary.
MSM will never give the story enough attention to force WH to spin.

...and the reichwingut spin machine has already begun accusing John Kerry of saying he wants Idiot Son impeached. Kerry has said nothing of the sort. Nader did. Conyers did. WE here at DU did. Kerry thus far has not. One 'source; is also calling it "The Impeachment Memo" - how's that for some MSM shit-spinning. They're already attempting to invalidate it by using such terminology and to frame it as a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy out to get poor witto Duhbya.

The MSM that hasn't ignored it (most of them have thus far) have already started spinning it for the (W)easelly little Creep and I'm sure they have their marching orders from the White House on how to continue that spin on Monday -- if they don't choose to continue ignoring it.

24. They always seem to notice what Howard Dean says...
They noticed when he said "I hate Republicans", they're noticing now that he said "Most Republicans have never done an honest day's work in their lives", etc. Maybe Dean should just say IMPEACH because of the Downing Street memo. I think they'd notice.

8. He's too dumb to have any strategy, but Rove et al will attack messengers.
My guess is that they'll claim anyone and everyone involved is insane, "desperate," etc...

No doubt they're already looking for some one thing to discredit the entire matter, in gullible people's views (as they did with the AWOL story and tried to do with Newsweek's Quran-desecration story).

14. Good one.
"Desperate." GOP is so good at framing issues and people with simple words. They take words that could be used to describe themselves, then to use those words against the Dems. Flip-flop. Hypocritical. Desperate.

JUST COME FORWARD.

This went on for weeks on end - then...

it morphed every few weeks with new demands that all started with
the word JUST.

The citizens of the U.S. must decalre a war on our own vicious leaders.

We must ditto their strategy.

DEMAND THAT THEY - JUST COME FORWARD.

No more little Scottie McLellan wimpy and embarassing lies.

Their lies embarass the United States of America. They are going to have to admit it SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. Use the RULE OF LAW.

15. I'm afraid that unless some specific words are used the MSM will ignore ..
Unless the memo specifically states that "Bush lied" or "Bush sent the US to war on false pretenses" the MSM will not care.

Worse yet, the US government will probably rely upon so-called "9-11 Commission Report" as a means of discounting the opinion of a British intelligence officer.

I'm not getting my hopes up on this one.

17. They really don't have to discredit it
all they can say is that the opinions of the people who are quoted in the memo about the US motivations are wrong. Since there is no "hard" substantiation of what is written in the memo - that is, there is no specific information, direct quotes from any US officials that would have to be confirmed or denied, no US documents that would back it up - the "difference of opinions" is a good enough argument that they will push.

26. I agree
The only way we're ever going to get this through is if there is a public statement from Tony Blair and he's under so much pressure from his people he will blame Bush. I've always felt like if one of them goes down they all will and will eventually blame Bush and of course Bush will blame Cheney and his PNAC buddies and that way it will be them who will be remembered as the people who brought down Bush etc. and Tony Blair. I wonder if Blair will talk though. Surely to save his own ass and also recently Blair asked Bush to help with the Africa funding and Bush declined and made Blair to be a fool, so one can hope.

20. The same way they went after Dan Rather
and Newsweek - by attacking the messenger. The first MSM outlet to run with the story will be mercilessly maligned and discredited. Why else would the story not have been on page one by now?
