29. read this
For my part, I am recirculating the letter to the President from Congress to my Congressional colleagues on Monday to give them another opportunity to sign on. Many who missed the opportunity to sign on the first time around have contacted me about doing so.

I have already sent one additional letter to the President adding several names and requesting that they be considered as original signatories. I have attached an updated list below of members who have signed on thus far.

This is by far the most important issue we are faced with. The most serious matter for the Congress and the President is the decision to go to war. It is the sole constitutional responsibility of Congress to decide whether to declare war. The President has a constitutional responsibility to be straightforward and candid with the Congress in providing it with the information it needs to evaluate the case for war. If that decision is skewed or corrupted by false or misleading information, it raises the most serious Constitutional questions and substantial issues about abuse of power.

The tragic reality is that over 1600 of our men and women in uniform are dead in a war that was entered into under false premises. Tens of thousands have been severely injured. Many more innocent Iraqis have been killed or injured as well.

If, as the Downing Street Minutes appear to clearly indicate, the falsehoods that led us into war were deliberate manipulations of the public and Congress, we deserve to know and we deserve answers. More importantly, we need to hold this President accountable for a very grave abuse of power.

LIST OF CONGRESSIONAL COSIGNERS

34. this too. kept from another
MNA Day 1 was May 2 2005.

We urged everyone to stop and remember and reflect on how each of us could begin to inform our government that Bush’s illegal war on Iraq must stop.

By saying ‘Day 1,’ we simply recognized that a persistent effort, not merely an event, would be required.

Since May 2 2005, we have observed MNA Day 2 and 3 and, now, 4. Each of those days represents our acknowledgement that 22 additional US soldiers have been killed in Bush’s war on Iraq – a total of 67 and we have not yet reached the end of the month of May, 2005.

We have two nonviolent options to force an end to Bush’s war on Iraq.

One is economic – a concerted effort to halt work and diminish the flow of capital. For the moment, we do not have the mechanisms to mobilize those types of sanctions.

The other is legal – a concerted effort to demand that those whom we have elected do their duty and investigate, indict and prosecute Bush and the members of his administration who lied to the American public, deceived the international community, launched a pre-emptive attack on another Nation and has persisted in occupying that Nation.

Congressman Conyers and AfterDowningStreet.org have begun to mobilize our fellow citizens to move along that path.

Accordingly, MissionNotAccomplished will now focus all of its messaging on building support for Congressman Conyers’ efforts to have Bush respond to the questions he and 88 other members have asked regarding the recently released “Downing Street memo.”

The mechanisms we intend to use include monitoring for each report of the death of another US soldier in Iraq, and posting a comment in this (and subsequent) threads with information, to the extent available, about that soldier.

We request that as many of you as possible spread the word to all you know that another fellow citizen has been killed and that they should call, write, email their Congressional representatives and demand that Bush respond to the Conyers inquiry. In other words, we will memorialize each death by a surge of email, phone calls, faxes, postcards, and letters demanding Bush be accountable.

We will be posting additional suggestions as to how to expand the effort to force Bush to respond to Conyers and we encourage all of you to be creative and share your thoughts with us.

If we are able to reach millions, if we are able to help Congressman Conyers achieve and exceed the 100,000 signatures he is seeking then, if still necessary, we may be better positioned to begin organizing concerted economic consequences.

We certainly encourage leaders and citizens from around the world to consider what they can do, economically, to inform Bush and his neoconster gang that their occupation of Iraq must stop.

Peace.

MissionNotAccomplished will continue to urge all our fellow citizens to realize that we will have no ‘moral authority,’ no credibility as a democracy, no pretense to being a civilization until “We The People …” stop the atrocities and rectify the misery and destruction perpetrated on the citizens of Iraq by a pack of liars who just happen to be members of the Executive and Legislative branches of OUR Federal Government.

Peace and Thank you for your brave commitment to America and humanity.

39. Here is a simple answer.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 02:59 PM by Tigress DEM
John Conyers is a US House Rep from Michigan. (On edit, Impeachment Proceedings must be brought from the House, then the Senate gets involved.)

John has been a watchdog on many issues and has a long history of activism and tackling issues no one else will touch. Vote Fraud in Ohio for example.

He drafted a letter and got 89 other members of congress to sign it and then he made that letter available for public signature on his web site. Yesterday I read he had 87,000 signatures, today it was 100,000 and even mainstream media is sniffing around this now although he initially submitted the letter early May.

If Bush tells the truth, he's screwed. Possibly forgiven, but impeached. If he lies, he gets impeached double time. It's a good day for our side.

The memo and/or the minutes of the Downing Street meeting show that Bush lied because of the timeline -23 July 2002. Pure and simple there were no WMD and Bush lied. Repeatedly we were told we were going to war over WMD. Then when no WMD showed up it was, "Oh, we thought they had WMD, we had "foggy" intelligence," is proven to be just a front because the memo and minutes show that Bush knew the truth but chose to push this war anyway.

From the letter Conyers wrote to pResident GWII

<snip>
In addition, the origins of the false contention that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction remain a serious and lingering question about the lead up to the war. There is an ongoing debate about whether this was the result of a "massive intelligence failure," in other words a mistake, or the result of intentional and deliberate manipulation of intelligence to justify the case for war. The memo appears to resolve that debate as well, quoting the head of British intelligence as indicating that in the United States "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

As a result of these concerns, we would ask that you respond to the following questions:
1) Do you or anyone in your administration dispute the accuracy of the leaked document?
2) Were arrangements being made, including the recruitment of allies, before you sought Congressional authorization to go to war? Did you or anyone in your Administration obtain Britain's commitment to invade prior to this time?
3) Was there an effort to create an ultimatum about weapons inspectors in order to help with the justification for the war as the minutes indicate?
4) At what point in time did you and Prime Minister Blair first agree it was necessary to invade Iraq?
5) Was there a coordinated effort with the U.S. intelligence community and/or British officials to "fix" the intelligence and facts around the policy as the leaked document states?

These are the same questions 89 Members of Congress, led by Rep. John Conyers, Jr., submitted to you on May 5, 2005. As citizens and taxpayers, we believe it is imperative that our people be able to trust our government and our commander in chief when you make representations and statements regarding our nation engaging in war. As a result, we would ask that you publicly respond to these questions as promptly as possible.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

I LOVE that last line.

43. I think she meant no congressional website gets that kind of traffic.
All congress critters have websites, but they aren't set up for major signature-gathering. After all, they aren't MoveOn with a huge mailing list with millions of e-mail address. I believe (I could be wrong) that congressional websites are basically places for constituents to bitch about local funding issues and potholes in the roads and stuff like that. So getting that many signatures on a congressional website is unprecedented.

28. Randi's pushing strong, Dem grassroots effort. Meanwhile Ed Schultz
just opened his show bashing the DNC and Howard Dean. He's playing clips of bush over and over, and mocking the DNC. Ed wants the DNC to use 'their playbook' and do everything the RNC does. I think he'd make his points better by not ramming them against the walls.

Wish Randi was on the radio up here - glad to hear she's pushing for positive, grassroots effort to help our side.

61. I didn't get a confirmation either
I think I'll shoot off an email asking if a confirmation is neccessary to get your name on the list. I hate to think that my name isn't on there.

64. We Need To Make People Aware Of This Stipulation!!!
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 04:28 PM by DistressedAmerican
If a lot of people are signing and not getting confirmation it may mean that a significant percantage of folks signing are not actually signing!

The info was in very small print on the confirmation page after we sent it.

PLEASE EVERYONE BE AWARE OF THIS STIPULATION! IF YOU HAVE NOT CONFIRMED YOUE E-MAIL YOUR SIG IS MOST LIKELY NOT ON THE PETITION!!!

I am going to try to resign and see if i get one.

On Edit: I just posted a new thread to help people get the word on this!

67. The wording sounded just the opposite to me.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 04:30 PM by DistressedAmerican
It said that you had to confirm before your sig was added. It also noted that if you do not confirm, you will be added to the mailing list anyway.

74. Let me know what you find out.
I don't think we should all sign the petition again. It would be hard to weed out the doubles and we'd be wasting Conyers' bandwidth.

I'd like to know how we can find out our name is on the list. Perhaps we could request some kind of confirmation feature on the site? Perhaps they could set up a place to enter your name on the site and connect that to some kind of proggy that searches the names and sends a confirmation e-mail to the address you enter...that sounds like it might work. I'm no programmer, but that sounds like something that could be done.

71. Ahhh, that's 100,000 new names for the no-fly list
Seems like political dissent is equated with terrorism by the goons of Homeland SS.

76. I'm responsible for at least 3
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 09:10 PM by Dee625
Myself, my husband and one person I work with.
One other person at work read about it and plans to sign.
Left www.downingstreetmemo.com up on the screen for another co-worker last night when I left. I'm educating them one at a time.
(Oh yeah - that's in a red county in a red state)

:woohoo:
