6. I just think he wanted to make peace with himself before he checked
out-an old man who's been carrying around a secret for 30 years. Some on the right look on him as a traitor and others look on him as a hero.
IMHO we need someone with the courage of Felt to stand up today to the
tyrants in politics and the media.

7. Bingo! He's been wrestling with this for years and only
told his family 3 years ago. His family convinced him he wouldn't be reviled and that he'd be considered a patriot by most people.

9. Actually, the timing....
...is meant to give the press some backbone and to remind them of who they are. Expect Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Perle, et. al. to come under some intense withering fire leading up to the 2006 elections. The controlling party in Congress will either have to start a judicial inquiry or face massive defeat.

10. Could it be a hint to potential whistle blowers today?
It was just a thought that occurred to me after reading the Post's article.

Felt's guidance to Woodward -- provided on "deep background" in secret meetings -- helped keep public attention focused on the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington's Watergate office and apartment complex, and on a subsequent cover-up effort. This ultimately led to a congressional investigation that revealed the role of Nixon and a number of his top aides. Under threat of impeachment, Nixon resigned in 1974. <snip>
In a family statement released today, Felt's grandson, Nick Jones, said, "The family believes my grandfather, Mark Felt Sr., is a great American hero who went well above and beyond the call of duty at much risk to himself to save his country from a horrible injustice." <snip>
"On several occasions he confided to me, 'I'm the guy they used to call "Deep Throat," ' " O'Connor wrote. The author wrote that Felt "still has qualms about his actions, but he also knows that historic events compelled him to behave as he did: standing up to an executive branch intent on obstructing his agency's pursuit of the truth." >more

11. I have a lot of questions about this whole thing
but here's a couple of guesses. Felt is close to death and wanted to see what the reaction of the public would be when he was revealed to be Deep Throat.

My second guess is that Felt wanted to be outed as Deep Throat so that his family could make some money from his role in Watergate with a book.

Both guesses could be right or neither guess could be right. Like the JFK assassination, I wonder if we will ever know the whole truth about Watergate.

14. If there is a book then I hope it tells the whole truth
and nothing but the truth and not a whitewash of Felt's role of Deep Throat. Felt worked for J.Edgar Hoover and I bet he knows a lot of dirty secrets. I hope he tells all of them to the public so people begin to realize what the ruling class in America is all about.

13. to encourage whistleblowers
I think it was a not so subtle message to the many disgruntled, fed up, and disgusted FBI, CIA to start coming forward. Let the floodgates open and put on your boots.
