1. They are restricting themselves to yuppies, obviously.
You know, that golden group that both political parties squabble over every election, that group that is able to remain utterly oblivious to the disaster wrought by the GOP every time that they get into power as they tool down the interstate, sealed into their oversized SUVs, CD player blaring and other bubble occupants gabbing to them on their cell phones.

They sure as hell didn't ask me.

2. Increase in consumer spending? Could be whistling through the graveyard
I sense it in myself sometimes. That urge to just pretend everything is peachy and go to the mall. I can tell what it is.

3. I am willing to bet that there are seasonals giving their two cents
Last month the right was all agog over 240,000 or so new jobs for the economy reported for April. More than likely it was just seasonal employment/students gearing up for the summer. I'd be willing to bet there might be some of that at play here. Does this jibe historically? With summer tourist/travel season starting up wouldn't one expect consumer confidence to turn up some?

4. Yep. Fixed like a Bush win in an election:
U.S. Consumer Confidence Probably Fell in May, Survey Shows

May 31 (Bloomberg) -- Gasoline prices close to a record probably pushed down consumer confidence for a fourth straight month in May, economists said ahead of today's report.

The Conference Board's index is forecast to fall to 96, the lowest since November, according to the median estimate of 41 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The index was 97.7 in April and at a six-month high of 105.1 in January.
