Poll question: Sex or Violence, which is more inappropriate?
Which is more inappropriate, sex or violence? I do not understand why it is OK to show a young child Jurassic Park and yet have an exposure of a woman's breast be bad. The opinions expressed herein are my own, not meaning to paint everyone any particular way, not meaning to say any one is bad, just my thoughts here.

It seems that violence is much more acceptable than sex for the majority of people in the current USA society, in media and in everyday life. TV, news, music, movies, other media all seem to say that it is more OK to show violence than sex. There are more car crashes, murders, etc, than sex acts and they are more acceptable than showing sex, though hints of sex pervade much in media (for example, advertising, many popular shows, etc). People slow down to gawk at accidents, yet get upset when a woman nurses a baby in public or someone shows their crotch in public.

Sex means not just intercourse or genital rubbing, but even kissing or seeing body parts/"private parts".

Violent acts involving sex go into the violence category as they are violence disguised as sex. Perhaps the stuff coming across as sex is actually violence (like the woman hiring the stripper for her 16 yr old is about control or violence?)?

Feel free to comment respectfully.

1. Of course it all depends on the context...
especially sex. So, its hard to ask an over-simplified question such as this, respectfully.

3. Mixing the 2 is a lot of the problem with sex
Is sex sex or violence pretending to be sex. I don't like violence pretending to be sex because it is violence. Why would the answer depend on the context especially sex, not violence? I am curious as this is a question I have thought a lot about.

5. Generally, I can see sex being depicted positively...
in more situations (loving relationship for example) than I can violence.

7. Me too, but it seems less tolerated
Why does the word "penis" evoke more snickers than "murder"? Why is sex considered dirty and violence acceptable? I think on these things and think I'm living in the wrong society at the wrong time. I think I need to be on a true hippy commune or somesuch but those have a problem of not working for long.

8. American's provincial standards on sex are a joke!
Nothing obscene about somebody getting their brains blown out. But I sure wouldn't want my kids thinking that fucking was normal. Killing good, loving bad. It's this conundrum that is responsible for the many republicans with all the sexual issues.

9. There are some strange attitudes out there
I was once asked by a neighbor ("told" is probably a better word) to stop being so affectionate with my husband while at her house as she didn't think it was appropriate "in front of the children."

Now, mind you, hubby and I weren't getting down and dirty on the kitchen floor - we held hands, kissed now and then and gazed at each other lovingly. That's all. The children in this case were between the ages of about 11 and maybe 16 or 17.

But here's the kicker - this woman and her husband fought constantly. They shouted and cursed and called each other horrible things and while I don't know for sure if it was in front of the kids (since they tended to behave when people were over), the kids could certainly hear it since the whole neighborhood did.

So :wtf: It's perfectly fine to call your mate a piece of shit but it's offensive for kids to see a loving couple?

It makes the brain hurt...........
