DU is being read on Capitol Hill at this very moment
I just had two email exchanges with two different Representatives' staffers, one from Massachusetts and one from California. They are printing out certain DU threads and passing around, as well as forwarding the links.

So keep up the good work, we have more impact that you may have thought.

DU :yourock:

I'll rephrase my statement. It was not so much of a faux pax or goof or slur, it was a hypocritical statement.

91. I wonder what the blivet** said to generate THIS Associated Press
statement:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/05/24/social.security/index.html
GREECE, New York (AP) -- President Bush, facing an uphill battle on Social Security in Congress, worked Tuesday to persuade moderate Republicans to resist pressure from constituents and support his ideas for changing the nation's retirement system.
(snip)

Discussed in this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3721897
Thread title: "Bush has just declared himself to be Dictator"

I'd like to know the exact words spoken by ** that sparked this first paragraph. It's the truth, of course, but he normally avoids that.

Man Accused of Tossing Kittens From Car

The Associated Press
Friday, May 20, 2005; 6:01 PM

HURON, Ohio -- A part-time police officer has been accused of throwing two kittens out of a car while driving at 70 mph.

Derik Wilhelm, 26, is charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of abandoning animals. The charges are misdemeanors that carry up to 90 days in jail.

Wilhelm is an officer in the village of Castalia, about 50 miles east of Toledo, and a ranger for Erie MetroParks.

A man called the Erie County Sheriff's Office around noon Tuesday to report seeing a driver in front of him throw two kittens out a window. The caller estimated the vehicle was doing 70 mph on state Route 2.

They posted a picture of the dog, and it was the cutest thing, and I thought: that dude's getting the maximum sentence.

And he did. Three years in the pen. You would kill someone and get less than that.
Well, any excuse to post a cute kitten! We DUers love our kittens!

(Edited because I didn't read your post thoroughly at first! My bad!)

What I WISH our congresscritters would do is read about how WE KNOW the election was stolen right out from under us, 3 times in a row: 2000, 2002, and 2004.

Once they research how EASILY the computer numbers were altered, they'll see why karl rove was in the war room all night during the election: tweeking a state here, tweeking a state there.

You really have to ask him and have him say it out loud to know difinitively. But there has been alot of evidence over time that he knows they were stealing it, and knows how the voting company maintenence men work.

Like as in here, he has consistently been paid for by the far right and its machinery. http://www.cronus.com/electionfraud

good for discussion or for quick overviews of everything that's going on, DU is great on both of those.

DU's greatest weakness IMO is the lack of a way to archive and browse through the very best, most important threads, maybe grouped on a weekly basis. It's frustrating the way one of the really important threads, loaded with resources and valuable comments, disappears so quickly from the Greatest page into oblivion, often when it is at its peak of interest. Too often, people have to reinvent the wheel, starting all over again because they don't know that resource-laden earlier thread is there.

Need to figure out something to do about that.

127. Yes, it will be a resource, but it doesn't meet all the needs.
You have to SEARCH a topic in Demopedia. Also, Demopedia will be hit or miss on what is posted there, it is not comprehensive. What I want is something that archives in a browsable format the most important, highly recommended threads so that busy people can look over a week's worth or a day's worth at a time and not miss vital information. So often people start what they don't realize is a discussion that has been already held, with links and other resources already provided - once the thread is off the Greatest Page, it might as well not exist unless it is searched for specifically.

So Demopedia is good, but it doesn't come near meeting the need, IMO. Hope something can be worked out.

149. Yes, you're certainly right. I hope better organization can enhance
their great value as an information resource. As it is, the interconnections tend to be temporary. When a story fades after a short time, the valuable interconnected information and discussion basically disappears. This is the single biggest flaw of the DU format, and Demopedia cannot fix it by itself.

70. general reply to thread
this is why I love DU--its a think tank and a crucible for liberal democratic ideas. Put up an issue or ask a question here and just sit back and wait for answers and solutions.

May times there is disagreement or passionate exchanges but that is part of the creative learning process that goes on here.

I would like to hope all the smart democratic thinkers, politicians, et al are keeping in touch with what goes on in DU all day, every day.

DU is the best.

136. There are some great threads in here....
hope Homeland Security doesn't read them. :scared:

Being serious, hey Congress people - hear you are getting connected to 'we the people.' :hi: :patriot:

BTW - is there any chance we can get Sir Galloway on our side.
Maybe give him a job, we love this Scottish wonder! He's a breath of fresh air and with such great command of the English language. :loveya:

138. Is this the quote by Galloway ?
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1624186,00.html
<snip>

Mr Galloway told The Sunday Times yesterday: "I have been asked to go on a highly lucrative lecture tour, with the promise of very large audiences...

"I think in the United States the ground was tinder dry, waiting for a spark like this. The democratic underground is alive with the transcript and video screening of this event, so there are a lot of people in the United States who are very happy about it."

142. Nice quote, but not the one mentioned
He thanked DU for the e-mails of support and said that DU members had political acumen.
Not me of course, but it felt good anyway for the group. :grouphug:

150. Hey, the thread they're reading is one inspired by a Tuesday post...
...I started.

Are they reading that one too?

You must have inside "connections."

Here's the one I posted:
