IMHO Priscilla Owen can fairly be described as a "conservative jurist". Yeah, her bias for corporate interests as opposed to those of the common citizen place her on the right fringe of conservatism, but I still expected her to pass the Senate rather easily. Janice Rogers Brown, on the other hand, is a fucking lunatic. Her expressed admiration of, and open call for a return to the "Lochner era" should even scare the shit out of more than a handful of Senate Republicans. The Lochner era refers to a period in the early 1900's when the court systematically stripped away a host of protective regulatory actions, all in the name of the right to a "free contract". That, coupled with her insane musings pertaining to the dismantling of the social safety net, expose her for exactly what she is, a savagely ideological wingnut. Even ONE Democratic vote for Brown should be met with unbridled outrage. (And the next time FauxNews bleats that she received 3/4 of the vote in "liberal" California, please keep in mind that she was running UNOPPOSED. 75% of the votes in a one-person campaign ain't particularly impressive.)
