RIP Ernest T. Bass
Comedian Howie Morris, dead at age 85. He was also a regular on the classic Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows"; but Andy Griffith fans remember him as Ernest T. Bass, crazed hillbilly philosopher.

Edited on Mon May-23-05 06:53 AM by dbt
RIP, Mr. Morris. Ernest T rocked! He was one of the first rap artists, as evidenced by his little rhyme while accompanied by a gasoline can on one of the "Darling" episodes.

What beautiful craziness.

Sorry, I had no idea I actually knew this much about that show. I liked it but not THAT much.

Maybe this is the wrong answer but I don't think so.

19. Her name was Charlene
and she, of course, got married (in spite of Ernest T.'s objections) to a character on the show named Dud Walsh.

She is still alive, as far as I know, as are most of the "Darling family" musicians, who as everyone knows were in reality a bluegrass band called The Dilliards (that's Doug Dilliard, BTW, on banjo in those episodes).

Hey MR, feel better now?? :hi:

22. Thanks!
I could not pull that out of my head for anything this morning. Of course it was. She had a terrible crush on Andy. Those shows were my first introduction to real Blue Grass and I loved it. I will always love that show because my family came from roots like that. My father was part Ernest T, part Andy and part Jed Clampett (without the money).

Weeeee Doggies!

31. A sort-of-related story
Last week I took my parents out to lunch and who was seated at the next table but George Lindsay, the actor who played Goober on the same show. My mom spotted him right away, but my dad's back was to him. Anyway, as we left my dad said, "Where was the actor who played Goober?" I replied, "Right behind you." His response: "There was no one behind me but an old man."

He's always been a big fan of the show and expected to see Goober looking, I guess, like he did forty years ago.

32. My favorite Ernest T. moment was when he was saving up for a
gold tooth. He was going to knock out a perfectly good tooth to replace with the gold one, plus two on each side so it would stand out "Especially, when I'm dancin'". Great stuff. LOL!

34. Great guy...
I actually met him a few times. I used to date his daughter way back in the 80's.

Then, strangely enough, many years later I switched careers and used to run into him at voice casting sessions (he did animation voice overs and I work in that part of the business.) He did some really good voices on Cow and Chicken.

He will be missed.

41. Only 5 episodes
Ernest T Bass was only in 5 episodes of the Andy Griffith Show.

Why does it seem like many more?

He was a larger than life character.

He made black and white deep and rich.

He made four generations of my family laugh.

He is gone but certainly not forgotten.

Rest in Peace Howard Morris.

Deepest regrets to Son David and his family and friends.
