Massive Disinformation...Can I Get an Amen?
ok folks, tin foil hat time...

looks like the downing street memo scared the bushco/neo-cons enough that they put thier BFEE "we creat our own reality" disinformation machine into hyper-drive to knock it off the corp news radar screen and its worked...

story breaks when john conyers and 90 dems sign letter to president asking him to answer the contents, then...

(ppl are refering to this as operation 5-11)small plane flies into restricted air-space...capitol alerted, but bush wasn't even told till after "event", hmm...maybe because there was no danger.

next day a questionable story about a grenade being thrown at the president emerges...turns out there was no grenade thrown and no danger...

newsweek becomes a target for a story related to US war crimes @ gitmo...and rumors say newsweek was going to do a story on the downing street memo, if that is true then this a pre-emptive attack against that report...

this is the story, an anonymous high-govt offical repudiated himself on the third round of fact checks...kind of like a planted story?

CBS plans story on missing weapons cache and bush's texas air national guard AWOL status, planted memos cast doubt on dan rather...CBS cancels story on weapons cache...NY times drops story about bush's listening device during the debates...see the pattern?

so anyhow...it now seems that newsweek is being scapgoated for the riots that are going on in afghanistan, even if the bush admin is only questioning one element of the story, not the other dozens of allegations...cast doubt on the messenger, see the pattern...well if that's the case how does scotty mclelland explain this from a govt website 5 days ago that says the riots are not tied to the newsweek story...

so, if in fact gen myers dismissed this story 5 days ago...why are we talking about it now?

because its serving a multi-tude of purposes...

keeping the downing street memo off the front pages
discrediting the so called "librul" media
burying and discrediting the war crimes @ gitmo report
pre-empting any story about the downing street memo, especially newsweeks

read...

Afghan Riots Not Tied to Report on Quran Handling, General Says

Army investigating allegations of mishandling at Guantanamo Bay facility

Washington – The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff says a report from Afghanistan suggests that rioting in Jalalabad on May 11 was not necessarily connected to press reports that the Quran might have been desecrated in the presence of Muslim prisoners held in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Air Force General Richard Myers told reporters at the Pentagon May 12 that he has been told that the Jalalabad, Afghanistan, rioting was related more to the ongoing political reconciliation process in Afghanistan than anything else.

5. Yes...
I think you're right on target - this is yet another masterful Rove-styled operation.

You gotta respect that man's imagination and nerve, plus the steely disipline of the Repubs to pull it all off with a straight face.

Amazing.

IF THEY TELL THE TRUTH... give them strength.. they are scared too.. all it takes is 1 powerful truth story in the right place at the right time.. and the time is now! The indy and progressive media is all over this.. we just need to expand awareness.. get CBS.. get CNN.. there are real people working there that are scared.. I know there are some asshole editors and owners holding it back.. help the remaining true journalist speak truth to power, let them know if they step foward with the truth, we will back him up, in HUGE numbers!! ... millions of Americans know the truth!

we are all in this together!

.. and get everyone you can to listen and watch indy and alternate media! . its out there!

19. thanks everyone...
this was an amalgamation of a few diff posts that i read here...i just wanted to put alot of it in one place...part of the dis-info campaign is to cast doubt on all media and turn up the noise so high that average ppl can't see and hear through the BS, it depresses and opposition and plants the seed of the big lie in the minds of the already clueless.

so...lets US make some noise, like someone else suggested get this info out, LTTE, emails, calls to your reps, etc...

26. One weak link in your theory:
The Newsweek story suddenly became Important because there were riots with 17 deaths in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I don't think Rove and company are prepared to order up a good riot in these countries. (Can you imagine the scandal if it turned out that Rove or some associate was the one who brought the Newsweek story to the attention of Islamic militants somewhere?)

But other than that, I think your analysis is spot-on. Anything to distract the media as well as the American people from that damning memo. Ultimately, this strategy will fail, however: as Iraqnam drags on, more Americans will question what is happening. Skepticism has already risen to 50% or more in the polls.

28. There were going to be riots anyway...
(see what the general said)

What Rove & Co did was use it to further intimidate the media away from covering the downing st memo

what did the chimp himself say..."There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

well i agree with his badly delivered premise...fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me...

30. You got it.. "its the media stupid" .. and the truth is leaking out ...
Edited on Tue May-17-05 08:31 PM by Griffy
EVERYWHERE.. I attended the Media Reform conference, and it was more like a REVOLUTION and we could all feel it! The number of people on our side is growing everyday, including important names that carry weight like Bill Moyers! I am focusing now on the media and informing everyone.. I quiz telemarketers.. cashiers, cab drivers.. you name it... I ask if they believe the media tells them what they need to know?... and I use the bankrupcy bill to highlight that real things are going on while they are being distracted with runaway brides and Micheal Jackson. I tell them..

"God forbid something happens, with the new laws you will be in debt for the rest of your life, and the companies will own you... thats why the news doesn't tell you, cause the companies are connected, and they contribute to these same politicians signing the bills!"

If they show interest, I refer them to alternative media, local progressive radio, internet sites and so on....

BE THE MEDIA!

.. just imagine... DU has 66,000 members... say 10,000 of us do this.. 3 people a day each will reach over 800,000 people a month! Rather than just hi.. bye... we say we know the media lies and theres a word of mouth campaign to inform America, it just takes guts and alittle knowledge! .. any topic works too... cause bush lies everywhere!!

i feel like my hopes have been squashed so many times...but ther furious reaction in the past couple weeks is really telling...they ARE AFRAID, i feel something big is going to happen...

i think a belated and growing awareness of good ppl in the media of what they have denied and self-deluded themselves for years is finally dawning on them...they are a target now from a RW paid and built dis-information machine run amok

i think the growing realization of an attack on iran is driving alot of good people who do and should know better...its the fear behind the fear.

and MP galloway should make them ashmed too.

35. White House, media in struggle for credibility - Kansas City Star
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/politics/11670391.htm

By pummeling Newsweek, administration officials got a chance to limit the damage to America's image abroad while also undermining the media's credibility at home. The furor over Newsweek's error comes at time when the media and the White House are on the defensive over credibility issues.

The media's problems are obvious - a seemingly endless series of scandals involving plagiarism, nonexistent or unreliable sources, phony memos, sensationalized stories, inflated circulation figures and other misdeeds that have besmirched some of the most prestigious names in journalism - The New York Times, CBS News and USA Today among them. Now Newsweek...

..."There's no penalty for scapegoating journalists," Rosenstiel said. "This is a way of discrediting all the reports. ... It's what they teach you in journalism school: If you spell a name wrong, people will doubt everything in the story."

The White House criticism of Newsweek rang hollow with opponents of the Iraq war who charge that President Bush deliberately overstated the threat from Iraq. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., accused administration officials of trying to silence skeptical media voices.

"There is - of course - sad irony in this White House claiming that someone else's errors or misjudgments led to the loss of innocent lives," Conyers wrote in a letter to McClellan. "When taken to task for wrongdoing, a pattern has emerged of this administration viciously attacking its accusers."
