18. Speaking of shame...
And this is off-topic, but yesterday I saw a nice shirt in a store with the word America proudly emblazoned across the chest. I really liked the shirt, but sadly realized, for the first time in my life, I don't feel at all proud of America and couldn't wear a shirt like that.

Your current avatar perfectly expresses my current state of emotion for our country. Do you happen to know if your Lady Liberty with her hands over her face is on t-shirts anywhere?

19. I wish!
I just happened to find it on the web.

It's also on my desktop at work. I love seeing people's faces when they get close enough to make it out. It opens up all kinds of interesting conversations!

11. I usually like his work, but here he needs to get his facts
together.

Everytime someone says * was "re-elected" the lie is repeated.

Tom Tomorrow should do his research.

12. agreed
that's the fatal flaw in an otherwise brilliant concept.

Damn.

And the stolen vote again in '04 is even more in keeping with his theme of identity theft. This cartoon could easily have worked and still been correct.

15. You're splitting hairs
Edited on Sun May-15-05 08:31 AM by Armstead
Bush won, the Democrats went along with it, we're stuck with Bush because that was the concensus.

That's not to deny the possibility that the election was not totally legitimate. But the simple fact that it was allowed to stand with no major challenge by the Democratic leadership was a tacit acceptance of the results.

And frankly, much as it pains me, I really do believe slightly more than half of the country did support Bush.

16. Oh for heaven's sake. The strip is a brilliant sendup & metaphor
and you want to nitpick what he didn't include. I actually thought you were referring to the fact that Bush was selected the first time & therefore couldn't be "reelected", but your beef with the cartoonist, that his strip doesn't make the point you wish it did, is still small potatoes indeed.

In fact, you could even argue that in the fourth panel, when Lady Liberty says "Half of me" and then "slightly more than half of me", the cartoonist is pointing out that it doesn't add up.

20. bush stole the election; needs to be hammered home w/every opportunity
And frankly, much as it pains me, I really do believe slightly more than half of the country did support Bush.

Get thee to the 2004 Election Forum and read. There is no way in the world more than half of this country supported bush. It pains me that a longtime poster such as yourself would be uninformed on this, one of the most important issues facing our country today.

I cannot and never will be as "easygoing" as you two are about accepting bush as the president. Your line of reasoning about the Democrats accepting him without a fight does not impress me as an argument. In fact, that is what we teachers of critical thinking call a straw man; has nothing to do with anything. The poster made a point about repeating the lie. What you've done is adjusted the parameters so Democrats can repeat the lie ("tacit acceptance"). Not falling for it, nor should anyone.

Shame on anyone who thinks this issue is "small potatoes."

21. Silence equals assent
If the "loser" comes out immediately and says he lost, and the Democratic leadership and majority concur, they have by definition supported Bush's win.

I don't like it any better than you, and I wish there had been at least more questions raised by the mainstream Democrats and media. But they didn't and there was no groundswell of grass-roots objecttion either. Therefore, for better or worse, more than half the country accepted his victory.

If you prefer, though, Tomorrow could just as easily said "about half the country" and the cartoon would still be making a valid point.
