A message from the Dems! I believe they've had enough.
George Bush, who polls say has become the most unpopular lame-duck president ever, is hard at work with Bill Frist, the Republican Senate leader with presidential ambitions, to take the GOP over the brink of extremism.

They're trying to seize absolute control over all three branches of government -- and they will do anything to get what they want. In one move they will try to simultaneously crush all dissent in the Senate and destroy the bedrock democratic principle of a fair and independent judiciary.

Their carefully-orchestrated power grab will come to a head in the coming days. They have refused compromises, they have refused common sense -- they have even refused to follow the Constitution. They want to shut down the government until they get their way.

This show by an out-of-control majority will be in the newspapers, on TV and around the dinner table.

As a Democrat, it will be your responsibility to get the truth out and make the case for Senate Democrats in your community. So here is your briefing:

http://www.democrats.org/nuclear

Polls show that the more people learn about the Republican attack on checks and balances, the more they oppose it. That's why it's vital for you to step up, get the full story, and help spread the word.

The Republican propaganda machine will be in high gear on this issue. The lead-up to this crisis has included Republican efforts to divide people by race, gender and religion. They are working on dividing America while Democrats are trying to do the people's business. We can expect more of the same -- it will all be amped up in the coming days.

You are the first line of defense against this onslaught. Use these resources to help you fight:

http://www.democrats.org/nuclear

Ninety-five percent of Bush's judicial nominees have been confirmed. Only the very bottom of the barrel remains -- judges so unqualified, so out of the mainstream, that they simply don't deserve lifetime appointments.

Republicans know that. They don't care about these judges -- these judges are only a pretext for the power grab. The fringe GOP leadership wants to break the rules and consolidate power now, so that they can ram through expected Supreme Court nominations later this year.

So they're going to change the rules to take away the filibuster, a 200-year Senate tradition that has protected the voice of the minority and protected our system of checks and balances. (Disgraced Republican leader Trent Lott invented the name for their plan to destroy all this: he called it the "nuclear option.")

Every Democrat has to be part of the fight on this one. The stakes couldn't be higher. So please be a part of this debate:

http://www.democrats.org/nuclear

Thank you,
Tom McMahon
Executive Director
Democratic National Committee

I just ressomended it.

Actually, the popularity of Bush & the repigs would only matter if there were some shreds of democracy left in this country. There aren't. It doesn't.

2. The Democrats should bolt.
If the Republicans are going to vote party line on every issue, there is no point in the Democrats even being present. Let the record show that these horrible bills and nominees were passed by a 55-0 vote in a 100 member Senate. There has to be some way to delegitimize this government. The people have to have it brought home to them that this is not "business as usual". Walking out en masse may not be the answer, but something has to jolt the public awake to what it is losing...

4. I wish they would, too. Too bad most Dems hold such great regard
for good governance and for the Institution of the Senate while the GOP could give a flying fuck about either one.

11. You know, there used to be a time, not too long ago,
when elected representatives of the people would debate the issues, investigate the possibilities and then vote their consciences. You would have Republicans and Democrats "crossing the aisle" on most issues, based upon what each one thought was the best thing to do for their constituents and the country, at large. Are there no Republicans out there who differ with their party on any issue? How can the republicans control their membership so tightly? Is it money, fear, or both? We are a nation divided. This is the Civil Cold War. It may be about to go hot...

Yes Dhalgren. The "civil cold war" is already here and you're right. It's about to go up by more then just a few degrees.

We have to all stand tight together on this.
No bickering.
Time to support our Dem's 100%.

I hope they aren't put into that position, but I'd hate to seem them have to backdown. It's giving-up all control and when that happens... Well, we might as well quit and give up.

Democracy will have finally taken it's last breathe.

8. This is it
When the sting was felt by democrats everywhere after the 2004 elections we all discussed the potency of the venom. Well here it is, they seem not to care about the sanctity of this country at all. Scary, It's just freaking scary.

Because they know they do not reflect the clear majority of Americans....bet that stolen election has them mighty nervous.

Payback is going to be sweet.

30. I don't believe that THEY believe
they will ever lose power and therefore, they are safe against long-term implications. They don't plan on being replaced; they don't believe they can be replaced. They believe it is impossible that they will not be "re-elected." That means they believe they have already succeeded in what they are trying to do - total control of the outcome of all "elections" and total control of the government. It started in 2000 and was finished in 2004.

If I were young and had the cash, I'd move to a free country.

19. I really, really don't understand why everyone is so worried.
Republicans are doing what they always do.

Going too far.

Sadly, one has to admit that republicans are "tighter", more organized, more focused on message and doublespeak, etc..

But their Greed always gets the best of them.

And when they make mistakes, they make big ones.

The American public doesn't want churches to dictate politics to their members.

The American public doesn't want a certain brand of Christianity taught to their kids in school.

The American public doesn't want a fundementalist regime in power.

The American public detests corporatism.

And the Republicans are doing what they always do, implode under their own brand of greed.

Thus, the pendelum will swing back towards the left in 06, and everything can start over once again.

Same is it ever was.

31. You are very optimistic.
Do you believe that the elections of 2000 and 2004 were fair? Do you believe the next one will be? I somehow can't get my mind around the fact that * boy "won" the election by the about same amount he was predicted to lose by - TWICE. How many times has THAT happened anywhere on earth.
