WTF......... I think I might like this Pope!
Benedict XVI calls for
journalistic responsiblity!
VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that the media can spread peace but also foment violence, and he called on journalists to exercise responsibility to ensure objective reports that respect human dignity and the common good.
“These important tools of communication can favor reciprocal knowledge and dialogue, or on the contrary, they can fuel prejudice and disdain between individuals and peoples; they can contribute to spreading peace or fomenting violence.”

9. He's done it before, and he is referring to the "so-called"
liberal media--in other words, the objective press, the one that questions what they are told from on high.

4. "Leading US Catholic is forced out by Vatican"
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=636554

"A leading Roman Catholic commentator has resigned as editor of an influential Jesuit magazine in the United States amid reports the Vatican doctrinal department formerly run by Pope Benedict had demanded his removal for being "off-message" on condoms."

5. He just fired someone for speaking the truth
He is much a two face liar

The editor of "America," an influential Catholic weekly magazine, has been sacked on orders from the Vatican, which threatened to impose a "board of censors" to oversee the magazine if he stayed, according to the National Catholic Reporter.

"He was forced out," NCR editor Tom Roberts said of the Rev. Thomas Reese, S.J., who had run "America" for seven years. Frequently quoted in the secular press, Reese also had been a CNN commentator during the funeral of Pope John Paul II and the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, formerly run by the new pope, had pressured to get rid of Reese "for about five years," Roberts said. A source told the paper that it had issued an ultimatum, "that either Reese goes or they would appoint a board of censors."

7. Maybe, but this same guy blamed the press
for the pedo-priest scandal. Faced with the revelations of widespread abuse (the outlines and details of which were certainly known about within the Church hierarchy for years, since the hierarchy acted to keep them hushed up) Ratzinger thought the scandal was actually that the press was sensationalizing charges against the Church, attacking the Church apparently out of some imagined secularist antagonism, and out of the press' well-known opportunism.

10. He is rubbing it in that he censored the Jesuit editor Reese
who, apparently was quite the liberal and criticized the draconian policies of the Vatican re women, married priests and the like. He was forced to resign and Ratzinger has been after him for a couple of years.

11. Don't be so quick to think he was encouraging journalists to
"report" the truth. He just wants them to report things that sound good. I am a Catholic and I am not "abandoning my religion" but IMO, the value of THIS particular pope is yet to be determined. Personally, I think he supports the zealots more than he supports "truth."

Ratzinger most likely thinks stories about WH lies, religious nut cases, and gay reporters having overnighters in the WH are "fomenting violence"! Those are the most recent stories in the media, so I have to believe he is admonishing the media for attacking fundies!

13. Thanks for the Catholic perspective
I just accepted what the man said on face value like the 'merican people do when chimp speaks. How was I to know that the Pope speaks "in code"? Guess it makes sense though, he is after all, a conservative politician.

16. Catholics don't listen to everything the Pope says, believe me...
If they did you would see Catholic families of a dozen children sitting respectfully in their pews side by side in EVERY row. BC has NEVER been accepted by the Catholic church. I have been witness to the baptism of the children of gay couples in the Catholic church as well. Without a doubt, not every Catholic priest regurgitates the edicts of the Roman Pope to his congregation. Some OPENLY defy those words others only do it behind the privacy of the confessional.

15. Let me know when he actually answers a question put to him by a reporter
He has thus far refused to answer any questions by the media. Time for him to start practicing what he preaches.
