Starbucks tunes out the Boss
Dust-up over why Springsteen's new CD gets a cold shoulder

By KRISTEN MILLARES BOLT AND D. PARVAZ
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTERS

The Boss' latest album might have debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts, but coffee giant Starbucks won't be leading the charge to sell "Devils & Dust."

The album, which has an advisory label warning -- a first for Bruce Springsteen -- includes a track titled "Reno," which mentions anal sex with a prostitute. In a statement, Starbucks maintained that "Reno" was not "the sole deciding factor" in its decision not to carry the album at most stores, mentioning shelf space and scheduling as other contributing elements.

But according to a recent Newsweek report, Starbucks was seriously considering co-sponsoring the release of "Devils & Dust," only to yank its offer to sell the album after hearing "Reno."

"While we agreed that the lyrics to 'Reno' did warrant an advisory, a variety of factors contributed to our decision not to carry the album in all of our retail locations," read a Starbucks statement. It noted that the album will be sold in two Hear Music stores in California, though it will not be available for digital distribution in the company's Hear Music bars.

9. Fear's a dangerous thing...
It can turn your heart black you can trust

It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
