Got Gay Marriage Ban Groups Now Press For Gay Adoption Ban (& Hetero Divorce Restrictions)
(Columbus, Ohio) Religious conservatives who succeeded in rewriting Ohio's constitution to ban same-sex marriage are pushing state lawmakers to make divorce more difficult and to ban gay people from becoming foster or adoptive parents.

<snip>

The new covenant marriage bill says couples who want such a marriage must go through counseling and sign a contract saying they understand they would have to go through a yearlong "cooling off" period with counseling before getting a divorce in most cases.

<snip>

The covenant marriage bill still allows divorce without a waiting period if there is adultery or abuse, but the abused partner would have to prove the abuse in court - the same situation that existed before no-fault divorce , said Tim Downing, president of Ohioans for Growth and Equality, an equal-rights lobbying group focusing on gay issues.

"It's a dressed-up bill to once again give women second-class status and to force women to be subservient to their husbands," he said.

--------------------------------

Once again, folks, why you should stop saying "too much, too soon" to gays. The RR isn't just going after them, they're going after YOU, too. If you let them regulate gay relationships, they will eventually regulate YOUR relationships. Keep that in mind next time you're nailing gays to the cross for supposedly making Kerry lose.

10. From this hetero granny...
These fanatics can stick their values where the sun don't shine. Whatever values they have, they are free to practice. Do not try to inflict those same warped values onto the rest of us.

It has never been an issue of gay rights, as far as I'm concerned; it's a question of human rights. It is accepted by people with functioning brains that sexual preference is determined at birth. People who are hardwired to prefer the same sex, or both sexes, or the opposite sex, do not make the determination themselves.

To me, it is an affront to common decency to deny anybody the right to love, and marry, and adopt children, if that is their desire.
Nobody has the right to tell another person that their love is wrong, or sinful. The only stipulation is that the people involved are both adults.

That's why I have been so opposed to telling our gay brothers and sisters to wait, people aren't ready to accept your love or marriage yet, or any of the other bullshit.

The right wing loonies are going too far, and it's time to stop letting them push us further and further back. They have a perfect right to follow their own moral precepts, but they most definitely don't have the right to determine mine, or yours. It's time to start pushing back. The expression, "enough is enough" doesn't apply, since it passed being enough and became way, way too much a long time ago.

5. The Democratic Party is lazy
Edited on Sat May-07-05 03:58 PM by Onlooker
Instead of educating people, the Democrat Party keeps trying to compromise ... to compromise away the rights of gays, of women, and now maybe even of married folk. The Democrat leadership is a mess to have allowed this state of affairs to have occurred. The sad thing is the Democrats who cow-towed as the right grew stronger are still calling the shots. They've even, apparently, pretty much silenced Dr. Dean.

14. no

If you are going to insult our intelligence, could you at least refer to our party as the Democratic Party?

The story here is about people in the theocratically "elite" portions of the country fending off reason and humaneness with a 2000 year old book they don't even understand. And, having a majority locally, there isn't much to be done by sensible Democrats other than telling them why it can't actually work, letting them try out their ideas. (Isn't that the essence of Republicanism, insisting on bad ideas and then when it all goes bust saying "uh, never mind, let's forget this ever happened"?)

The Right is this way. They're little kids adamantly playing with fire, we tell them what is predictable enough but can't take away the matches every time, and then they get burned and start crying and run away from the mess.

In this case, they want a 'Biblical' way of life or something, and they want to impose it. Any reading of the history of Puritanism in America can tell you how it ends, because it's been a bad idea and proven itself a failure for all four hundred years of its existence, if not the millenium of religious 'reform' and warfare that preceded it on the same impulses. It has a much longer and worse record than Communism, because it is really a survival of pre-Christian paganism with a facade of Christianity.

I'm sure this is more BS from the bloat-headed Phill Buress. Someone needs to start following him around and get some dirt on him.

7. These people
These people will never be satisfied until gay people are exiled into camps and and put to death. They won't say so directly (not now anyway), but that is their ultimate goal.

8. Of course they aren't just going after the GLBT community
Why anyone thinks they will be safe from the wing nuts truly puzzles me... hell, not even some wing nuts will be safe from other wing nuts...

I got news for everyone, there's no way to piss a wing nut off...they're already pissed off and they stay that way...

you won't turn possible voters off by supporting human rights for all...they're already turned off because you're a democrat...get real. They'll come after you because you're a democrat.

9. That's why for me the gay marriage debate is not about
weather or not gays should be allowed to marry. It is about what's government doing in the marriage business to begin with.

go figure.

13. And seldom used from what I have read.
If people want to stay married, they will work at it. States offering covenant marriages, and I belive several do, are finding few takers of this 'special' marriage.

Oh, and they call us 'elitists', that 'I'm more sacred than thou' crowd.
Well, let's start by addressing the divorce rate in red states.

16. Some of us are working to stop the idiocy...
There is a new group in Ohio - Equality Ohio. Our mission statement is in my sig line, our website is EqualityOhio.org. It is a deliberately diverse group (which means it includes republicans, democrats, rural, urban, and (not enough yet) class and ethnic diversity. The diversity makes for some interesting conversations - but ultimately working with folks with different political and other persuasions is the only way to achieve more than just the uneasy truce that comes from (temporarily) getting 51% of the vote.

It's in the organizational stages, but there is a weekly e-mail list you can join designed to keep members informed about what is going on in the state.

19. I see from the article that Ohio has banned civil unions for heteros
as well as gay couples. Maybe they can take it the next step and insist that all marriages must be performed in a church by a minister, no more justices of the peace. I am so ashamed of my home state. Glad I now live in Liberal Massachusetts.
