what natural disaster is most likely to wipe out the human race?
Edited on Sat May-07-05 01:03 AM by mopaul
supervolcanoes? massive earthquakes? polar shift? ice age?
asteroid impact? disease?

it's happened before, and it'll happen again.

6. Asteroid, if we ever got that far
but a synthetic disaster in the form of a massive nuclear war will do it far earlier. It's a statistical certainty.

If I understand the way global warming works, we'll end up causing a catastrophe ourselves that will do us in.

15. Two things
are to me most likely.

A virus cannot be stopped from wiping out most of the world's population.

An asteroid impact wipes out everyone.

I wish we were moving into space quicker. It would be nice if we were on a few planets so one disaster wouldn't wipe out the entire race.

17. I don't think it can be done, completely...
At least short of some kind of calamity that wipes out all multicellular live altogether.

Even pre-technologically, as a species, we've managed to stick our snouts into every corner of the world imaginable, from the coldest tundra to the most barren desert to the murkiest swamp.

We're clever as hell, can eat anything, are fertile all the time and have a survival drive so strong we'll put up with anything to live another five minutes.

As long as there are roaches left to eat, hairless apes will be there to eat them.

22. the manmade natural disaster of global warming which will lead to:
Severe weather cycles with individual local disasters like hurricanes and flooding, combined with rising seal levels which will cause a temporary Ice Age which will also displace coastal residents, combined with rising rates of environmental diseases like melanoma, combined with viruses and pestilances the like of which we've never seen, combined with coming wars over fewer and fewer natural resources like food, water and energy. Pockets of humanity will be picked off serially. This really could happen. If you want to depress yourself, read the 3 part series that has been running in the New Yorker. We are all whistling in the dark.
