Received by email.

"Yesterday, on the National Day of Prayer, we learned that the East
Waynesville Baptist Church in North Carolina essentially kicked out its Democratic members. Nine members were "excommunicated" and 40 other members of the 405 member church resigned in protest." (Daily KOS

:wtf:

Why is KO citing KOS, this story broke on WLOS, was emailed by a viewer to her daughter and first posted HERE!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3604552&mesg_id=3604552

...then subsequently posted (one 1 minute later with proper credit) on KOS.

=============================

My email to KO:

As a regular contributor to DU and member of that community, I feel affronted that you would credit dKOS as the source of your lead story:

"Yesterday, on the National Day of Prayer, we learned that the East
Waynesville Baptist Church in North Carolina essentially kicked out its Democratic members. Nine members were "excommunicated" and 40 other members of the 405 member church resigned in protest." (Daily KOS http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/6/84353/67437

If you and your staffers took a few seconds to research the source of the story, you would have found it was from DU. KOS' "georgia10" got it right:

Yesterday, on the National Day of Prayer, we learned that the East Waynesville Baptist Church in North Carolina essentially kicked out its Democratic members. Nine members were "excommunicated" and 40 other members of the 405 member church resigned in protest.

From libnnc over at DU:

"One of the local women who got excommunicated said on TV that it was like a cult. Another man who got excommunicated said that the rest of the congregation stood up and applauded as the Democrats were told to leave."

Here is the initial DU post:

East Waynesville Baptist Church in NC expells all Dem members

My Mom just emailed me the news. There's no link yet.

She said WLOS tv just broke in to report that the East Waynesville Baptist church has officially excommunicated all its democratic members.

She said that before the election, the preacher told the congregation from the pulpit that if they didn't vote for * they had to come to the altar to confess their sins and repent. they could'nt be members. (My Mom doesn't attend that church--she's United Methodist, but I know of lots who do attend).

From Mom's email: "One of the local women who got excommunicated said on TV that it was like a cult. Another man who got excommunicated said that the rest of the congregation stood up and applauded as the Democrats were told to leave."

Okay, I'm officially freaked out.

libnnc

Note that DU uses eastern time, KOS pacific. So you can see it was posted to DU before KOS.

When you do the story tonight, please get the source correct: a WLOS viewer emailed it to her daughter who posted it to DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND.

This is war, and in war you do not worry about WHO gets credit for keeping your ass alive and the line moving forward...you just do it, and hope that your side prevails!

Why can't Olbermann? Hard work, I guess.

15. He has minutes and seconds to get the point across
...as well as competing stories, all of equal importance to someone or other. Instead of bashing him, we should thank him. He has to get that stuff past the corporate suits, and he also has to carry the stories THEY want to push.

Anyone who tracks back his cite will find this place, eventually, via Kos. And really, who needs to be a target for rightwing loonies? This is a progressive forum, not a news outlet...and we get enough trolls and roilers as it is.

25. And face it, Kos is a more credible source than DU. . .
With Kos, you have a select group of people putting out a daily blog within self-established parameters of reliability. Here on DU you never know what you're getting. . . I've read incredibly perceptive and insightful views followed by the most assinine opinions, all in the same thread.

3. Ummmmmm, because
that is where the quote came from. He was providing a source for the quote, as per appropriate process.

It doesn't seem like he is saying "and click the link below for the website that exclusively broke the story!"

7. Actually, it didn't "break" on the DU board. . .
it was first reported by WLOS-TV . . . as your linked thread makes quite clear. So why didn't you give credit where due instead of claiming it for DU?

I saw it here on LBN
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1449772

and that post already had a link to KOS.

I doesn't matter who was first, it matters that it gets out there. Don't those of us on this side have enough problems without getting into school yard games with each other. Just be glad that KOS, DU and KO all picked up on the story, the order doesn't matter.

13. The DailyKos thread gave credit to and linked to libnc's post on DU
who gave credit to WLOS (which we all groaned about since it is a Sinclair station).

I'm just glad he is covering it. It needs publicity. This should be a bigger story then the damn Runaway Bride crap.

...besides its important that the story gets out more than which internet site gets credit for posting what they saw on TV first.

Just get it out there.

I was just in that area, over Easter. The whole place is cram-packed with Baptist churches, in one (tiny) town alone I saw six of them.

21. Keith Olberman is one of the good guys
If people want to get upset over an error in attribution, then they have bigger issues. Are we here to engrandize ourselves or fight the conservative machine while pushing our progressive cause? If it is the former, then I'm out. I'm not interested in such things. If it is the latter, then let's not fret over such minor points and beat up one of the good guys over it. Drop him a note, let him decide how best to attribute the story, but understand, the attribution is the smallest part of the story.

24. keep your eyes on the prize
better to spend the energy continuing to blast the story.

I would have posted myself yesterday evening because I also saw the WLOS report, but I had another engagement. It doesn't matter.

All I care about is that the Waynesville church be treated to a bit of the media circus other fanatics have recieved lately.
