Jesus Coming Soon
to a theater near you.

I'm in Austin, Texas. For all you Texas bashers, Austin, the city, is a Liberal Mecca. Honestly. I don't know the statistics, but it has to be pretty close to the top of a list of liberal cities in the US.

Lately, I've been seeing tacky handmade signs that say "Jesus Coming Soon" around town pretty frequently. I suspect this is some kind of movement, because of the questionable wording "Jesus *is* Coming, shithead!) All the signs are shoe-polish black on white poster-board. One extreme dork even displaced one of the homeless guys who hang around one nearby intersection. He had some kind of complex southern-engineered pole for his sign. Creepy.

Anybody else been seeing stuff like this???

Woo Hoo!!! My uncle George is now one of the full time loonies campaigning for governor on the steps of the Capitol. Mom says he's there every day, ranting and perfecting his madman look.

1. Those signs make me laugh.
Because I think of something different when I see the word "coming."

But that shit's annoying.

4. Times Square
Used to be a rag tag guy around Times Square about 40 years ago carrying a sign saying, "The End Is Now, Jesus Is Coming". I remember some people would put loose change in his cup.

Copycats.

9. Well, before the Neo-Cons chose Texas as a test-site
Texas was a lot more liberal. A lot of my irritation at having Shrub and the Bugman claim Texas as home is the desecration they wreaked here to get this all started. We always had redneck throwbacks, but the Neo-Cons have empowered and emboldened them to amazing heights.

7. I remember as a kid in the hills of Kentucky...
seeing those signs on the side of the road, about 10 foot tall and made out of concrete or marble or some stone....They would just pop up on the side of the road, it seemed. It's been around for a long time...

8. My favorite is about an hour from Austin
in a small town. "Jesus is Coming Soon. Repent!" on a metal sign up on a pole 15 - 20 feet high. The paint is faded and peeling.

I guess "soon" is up for interpretation. Geological time frame soon??

10. Battleground Austin: 2006
I'm an Austinite living in NYC (but I'm coming home for the summer, yey!) In fact, I opted to live in Austin OVER NYC for a long time because I felt that A-town was, overall, more progressive.

The problem is that the fundies are pushing in on Austin hardcore. Last time I went home in January, some of my friends were sad that the fundies were putting banners on the 12th street bridge that read HONK IF YOU HATE GAYS (did you see that one by chance?)

I think that Austin might be the battleground for the next civil war. It will be interesting because who knows what side local loveable kooks like Alex Jones (who is not much of a kook INHO except for his wild rants on the future persecution of christians) will fall on.

Let's see: religious wackos, stoned hipster revolutionaries, and libertarian anti-government patriot-types...all in a battle to the death.

I miss Austin!

14. Honk Banners.
No. I didn't know about that. It must have been a one-time shot that didn't get much recognition. I know gays here who would be real cranky about such things.

In Texas, gays own guns too.

18. The Cheerleader thing is just grandstanding for attention.
In small-town Texas, high-school football is all the entertainment they got. And the cheerleaders provide a lot of the entertainment.

22. If he is really coming
fundies need to watch out. Their hate preaching, bigotry and self-righteousness will remind him of the Pharisees. He'll probably kick their ass! The first tele-evangelist psuedo religious man he sees, a bolt of lightening will strike that person down.
