1. Sweet
I'm still kind of worried, lot's of Dem defections in the House. It's gonna take a filibuster to stop this garbage and this time, Reid and Durbin HAVE to whip the caucus in line. This is too important to give in.

3. The Republicans tagged it onto the Iraq war spending bill

Democrats won't stop drivers license verification bill, Reid says
By Sergio Bustos and Doug Abrahms, Gannett News Service

WASHINGTON — A controversial bill that would require states to verify the citizenship or legal status of anyone applying for a drivers license will likely become law because Senate Democrats don't have the votes to stop it, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Monday.
Aimed at illegal immigrants, the so-called Real ID Act is expected to be included in a final version of an $81 billion spending bill to fund the war in Iraq, according to Reid, D-Nev. House and Senate lawmakers begin negotiating a final version of the spending bill this week.

Reid and most Democrats had fought for months against the Real ID measure and succeeded in keeping it out of the Senate version of the spending bill. But Reid said Democrats have decided they would not hold up passage of the Iraq war spending bill solely because it includes the Real ID Act.

Republicans "are going to keep the Real ID (Act) on the supplemental," said Reid, who opposes the measure. "They did it on purpose. They put it on the supplemental, which we couldn't stop" because both parties support the additional funds for U.S. troops.

President Bush has pledged to sign the bill into law if the House and Senate can work out their differences. CON'T

2. You know what is so incredibly stupid about all this??
Any self-respecting terrorist who wants to beat the system just needs to contact a local teenager who will be able to get him any forged document he wants.....any. We were just talking about this a few minutes ago in my home. A certain teenager wanted to go out and drink for 5-5-5 today; is in high school; and has mit full of false ID's ranging from a college ID to a fake driver's license. Why don't we spend our time, money and trouble in this ignorant nation on something worthwhile. God, I'm getting sick of these asshole politicians who can be out thought by kids.............

9. Hell, ever read "Day of the Jackal"?
A character goes to a graveyard and looks for somebody that was born about the same time as himself, but died as a child--so there's no real record. He goes and gets the dead child's birth certificate through public records, and uses it to get fake ID.

It was written back in the 70s, but I highly doubt much, if anything, has been done to stop up the loophole.

I really admire the work you've been putting into this, and for that, I'm going to call my Senators right now (not, of course, that they'll give a damn, but what the hell).

Keep fightin'...

6. Where are all the fundies on this issue?
I used to have them come by my office from time to time freaking out about having someone demand their SS card for identity....they were very much against a national ID card.

Have they switched on this issue?
