Now the feds are investigating Martha Stewart's "workout routine."

A week after questioning Stewart's attendance at a Manhattan black-tie gala, probation officials said Friday they will look into the domestic maven's comments in the upcoming People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" issue in which she says her exercise regimen includes "lots and lots of walking."

In a phone interview from her 153-acre estate in Bedford, where she is serving five months of home confinement, Stewart — who made People's coveted list — described how she stays trim since her supervised release from prison March 4.

"I walk as much as I possibly can. It's hilly here, so it's a lot of good aerobic exercise."

The interview — conducted in early April — suggests the slender-looking Stewart has been hoofing it through the rolling hills surrounding her $40 million Westchester County spread since her release.

But officials told The Post that the conditions of her house arrest state that Stewart cannot leave her house — except for 48 hours a week for four reasons: church, food shopping, doctor appointments, or work.

5. Home confinement on a 153-acre estate--don't make me laugh

As a part-time music online journalist, I "work" by covering concerts, reviewing albums, and conducting interviews, most of which take place outside of traditional business hours. I also have to work at letting people know that my Web site exists--namely, music fans so that they'll read it, and music professionals so that they'll give me additional work publicizing their bands. I deduct the expenses of doing this from my taxes.

Martha also has the kind of business that cannot grow unless it's regularly promoted to potential consumers, advertisers and industry affiliates, so she did nothing wrong by attending the party. I attend similar functions--conventions, award ceremonies, benefits--because they're as much about making and maintaining business contacts as they are about having a "gala" good time.

As long as Martha was at home on in her office when she did the phone interview, that's not a problem, either--again, getting her company's name before the public is part of her job. And she can take all the walks she wants as long as she takes them on her 153 acres.

If anyone's at fault here, it's the judge in Martha's case for not being more circumspect about what "home confinement" would mean to a multi-millionaire with a 153-acre estate and a job that does not adhere to normal business hours!
