I sent a nasty message about that show - and to my delight at least a couple of women were up in arms about this show. And, ok, I admit I had to "troll" a bit there too a leave a few messages.

Oprah, don't do the Arnold/Maria interview!
Posted by: carolwill2
Posted on: 09/13/2003 at 12:09pm (167. of 331)

As a Californian, I am offended that Oprah is doing an interview with the one celebrity candidate and his famous wife. Such attention would only serve to enhance the media attention surrounding Arnold - attention not given to those candidates that are without such fame and wealth. Arnold/Maria continues to use their media access in order to get attention without participating in substantive debate. This interview would be a clear abuse of the public airwaves without EQUAL time and attention given to the other major candidates. This interview could very well serve as an affront to the citizens of California. We are already seeing our legitimate votes, rendered last November, highjacked by a media circus - with Arnold serving as ringleader. Oprah, don't pander to your famous friends - please!

4. The New York Times to Oprah 'give equal time to Dems'
------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 17, 2003

Oprah, Arnold and Equal Time

Oprah Winfrey did Arnold Schwarzenegger a big favor this week when she had him on her show. Now she needs to do the voters a favor, and extend an invitation to the other top candidates in the California governor's race. The federal equal-time rule has little force these days, but the principle behind it remains sound: broadcast television should not use its tremendous influence for partisan purposes in an election.

For anyone selling a book or a movie — or a political candidacy — "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is a coveted outlet. It is viewed by a large number of women, many of whom have great respect for Ms. Winfrey's opinions, so it is a great venue for Mr. Schwarzenegger. The polls show him running far worse among women than men, and he has been embroiled in controversy recently over some sexist comments made to magazine reporters.

Ms. Winfrey is not the only television host who has given Mr. Schwarzenegger's campaign valuable free publicity. The bodybuilder-turned-movie-star-turned-politician announced his candidacy on "The Tonight Show." The host, Jay Leno, apparently did not know in advance that Mr. Schwarzenegger would say he was entering the race, but given the speculation at the time, it was a distinct possibility.

Under federal law, broadcast stations — which operate on airwaves owned by the people — are required to give equal time to candidates for public office. The whole doctrine raises free-speech concerns about the government's dictating the content of programming. But in any case, Ms. Winfrey is probably exempt. There is properly an exception for news interview programs, which her show — and, recently, Howard Stern's — have been ruled to be. But even if Ms. Winfrey has the right to invite only one candidate, it is a poor use of her franchise.

7. I don't understand those comments added to a 2001 thread?
The comments about Maria and Arnold are added to a thread from 2001. Will anyone see them? Her September 2003 list of topics doesn't tell what date any of the shows were presented. Very confusing.

12. i was one of them! (and got a confirmation)

told her it was utterly obscene that she would use a nationally syndicated program to give a platform to a single, 'celebrity' candidate.

but ultimately, rich folk really don't care "what you think"...

13. Are you kidding? She donates 10% of her annual income to charity.
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 05:24 PM by tjdee
I love how people with no information say things like this.
Here are the FACTS on Oprah:
"Oprah donates at least 10% of her annual income to charity, and has made a huge difference in the world through various programs and causes that she has sponsored. She focuses primarily on three things in her giving: women, children and education. Oprah believes that "when you educate a woman, you set her free."

In September 1997, Oprah launched Oprah's Angel Network, which has collected over $3.5 million to create college scholarships and has funded nearly 200 Habitat for Humanity homes. In April 2000, Oprah's Angel Network created the "Use Your Life Award," which gives $100,000 every Monday on The Oprah Winfrey Show to people who use their lives to improve the lives of others.

Oprah's initiated the National Child Protection Act in 1991 to establish a national database of convicted child abusers. On December 20, 1993, President Clinton signed the "Oprah Bill" into law. Oprah has established scholarships and donated millions of dollars to higher education institutions, and most recently, she is building a school for girls in South Africa. Oprah also serves as National Spokesperson for A Better Chance, an organization that provides students, predominantly from inner city schools, the chance to attend many of the nation's finest schools. "

In addition, she also has the Oprah Winfrey foundation, which does more of the same, internationally. Her school in South Africa is opening in 2005.

First, I wasn't addressing the Arnie thing. I was addressing the charge that she's some self-involved rich person (what has she ever done for humanity, or whatever), by providing information of her many, MANY philanthropic works.

As to the issue:
Maria Shriver is a personal friend of hers. She's going to get crap for that, rightly so, but it's no more nefarious than that. If she felt like helping Karl Rove, she'd have gone to Afghanistan when they asked her.

The woman has donated thousands of dollars to the Democratic party....sigh.

You know what, you can't win with DU. One false move, and you may as well be dead to some people.

Uh, okay. Raising millions of dollars for women and children means keeping them in the dark. Initiating a law means keeping them in the dark.

Oh, the things I learn on DU!

How many laws have you initiated? How many children are you educating?

22. I like Oprah or anyway
I did. I always watched her show and I feel she is one of the most influencial women in this country, that is why she needs to understand herself what kind of message she is sending. It is very irresponsible of her to be promoting a sexist like Arnold, by doing that she is letting down the loyal women who admire her.

19. Hmmmm... a post from shrimp's home town
"These are truly dangerous times for our country.
If Oprah wants to get involved with politics why doesn't she cover some of the thousands of demonstrations against the war and against this administration being held all over this country that are not reported by our media?

How about our First Amendment;freedom of the press; our freedom of speech; freedom to peaceably assemble.

The Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendments that have gone down the drain.

Oprah, we need your help to help us save our country and our rights as American Citizens. "

I've read a few articles about them too. Pretty cool. They are set up next door (near?) to Bush's "ranch" and they let reporters use their broadband connection to file stories.

24. I wonder how she can support the party that stole the votes
of tens of thousands of African-Americans during Selection 2000. As far as I am concerned, people who do that need to have their values questioned. I know Oprah does a lot for a lot of people. She has made a significant difference in my own life but that doesn't mean that everything she does is OK and should go unchallenged. She was wrong for using her platform to provide an unofficial endorsement for her friend's husband and I believe that she is also wrong to support the recall in California. It is nothing more than a blatant power grab by the party that MOST AMERICANS do not agree with and can not be rationalized under any circumstances.
