Is anyone REALLY shocked that the new Pope
is conservative? Did anyone really think that the Catholic Church
would put anyone who is near progressive into their throne?

1. I heard John Paul II appointed almost every single cardinal.

So no, I wasn't expecting a change.
Although I never once cared what the Pope thought about anything until I found out the Pope spoke out against the Iraq war. That was nice, but I'll probably go back to not caring what the Pope thinks since I'm not Catholic.

2. I would expect that they'd at least put up a conservative
who wasn't so openly hateful and evil.

he holds no beliefs that would shake up the Catholic hierarchy.

I'm just gonna move on. When an atheist, female, black Pope is elected I'll get worked up about it.

4. If they want a conservative, that's their choice.
Everybody knew it wouldn't be a mover and shaker.

I like controversy anyway, it will be interesting to see the reaction to some of the stuff he proposes.

Maybe he'll turn out opposite expectation. He might surprise some people, remember he's the big cheese now, he doesn't have to do what Pope John Paul II tells him. He may have new ideas here and there, but no earth shattering ones I'd bet.

6. it's beginning to sound like the Pope's election was an ego thing . . .
the more I hear, the more it seems that Ratzinger just wanted to be Pope so he could have his name inscribed in the historical record . . . he mentions to the cardinals that his reign will likely be a short one, and he promises to soften his hard line in order to get elected . . . just sounds like an overactive ego at work to me . . .
