The supreme insult : "French". Even for the Democrats ?
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 05:30 PM by BonjourUSA
Say me if I'm wrong.

I heard that the Senator of California talking about the postponed vote would have said that this situation was not very democratic, it was not American but French.

Is it true ?

4. I saw the comment made yesterday by McClintock. . .
one of the Republicans trying to steal the California governorship. He was quick to say the comment ("It's not very democratic, nor very American; it's positively French") came from Mark Twain. Given the flavor of this century, the remark (even if leavened by association with Twain) fell flat.

12. Now the French have a more democratic government than we
do, and they don't censor dissent.

5. Bonjour, Bonjour
I assume you're French? Glad you came here to ask about this.

Can you give us more information? The two California senators are Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Barbara Boxer would *never* say that. I dislike DiFi, but I don't think she'd say that, either. Plus, she's been compaining against the recall. I would think she'd be happy for the new court ruling.

Could it have been someone from the House of Representatives? There are lots of those from California, and some of them are pure morons.

9. The French have a REAL democracy
a multi-party system that represents all voices. the US has a plutocracy with a barely-functioning democracy. I was in Paris during their elections when Chirac won and was pleasantly surprised with all the open debate and the strong feelings against Le Pen and fascism. Vive la France!

This is a direct steal from Mark Twain (no minor francophobe himself, except that he had a sense of humor about it). I forget what he was referring to, but the way he described it was as follows:

"It is unAmerican. it is unBritish. It is French."

I saw McClintock foaming at the mouth on this issue and caught the quote immediately. Not only is he not funny, he's not even original.

ON EDIT: Heh heh, I see I'm not the only one to notice this. I guess he even admitted it himself. Well, exCUUUUUUSE me.
