Our armed forces killed quite a few German soldiers, sailors & airmen during WWII. Not all of them were party members. And numerous civilians, including women & children, died in bombing raids. Were all of them Nazis? (Note: My father & 2 uncles were in the 8th Air Force.)

Quite a few Nazis were forgiven after the war. Remember Werner von Braun on Walt Disney, showing us the future in space?

24. Not all American GI's were too thrilled to be doing it.

My dad, among others, was aware of the fact that he was shooting his distant relatives, and fellow Christians. He does not talk about the war, and in no way feels any glory at his participation in it. He also lost his youngest brother during that war.

In one of my first churches, I had a choir member who grew up in Nazi Germany. His family invited me over for Christmas dinner, and he shared some of what he went through, as a German Christian. One day, shortly after the war ended, an American GI came up to him, slapped him on the face, and said "what are you looking at, you fucking Kraut?" Forty years after the fact, he still felt the sting of that encounter. Georg is one of the most devout Christians I have ever known.

I think Georg and my dad have a lot in common. And I think Germans and Americans do, too. I don't see anyone embracing fascism here.
