Bush coming to NC for Earth Day event
(btw, Smoky Mountains National Park has the worst air quality of all the national parks, I suppose Bush will be here to tell a bunch of outright lies and push his "Clear Skies" scam)

GATLINBURG, Tenn. - President Bush will make a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park next week for an Earth Day event, according to the office of a Tennessee congressman.

The office of U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. announced that Bush plans to visit the park for an event Friday, April 22.

An official in the office said, “We can confirm that the White House has indicated he will be in the Smokies for an Earth Day event one week from today.”

Neither the White House nor the park would confirm the visit.

Chickens gather to honor Colonel Sanders. Fred the chicken had this to say "The Colonel is a true friend of us chickens". :eyes:

7. Wonder if it will be anything like this:

The stone wall where the picture was taken is at Newfound Gap, right on the Tennessee/North Carolina line. I've stood on the same spot many times, but I'll be sure to avoid the mountains next weekend.

10. Sorry, it won't be like this...
The sky will more of a sickly gray from the pollution from the great cities to the North and south of the mountains. Forget seeing a beautiful sunset there, all you see is gunmetal gray any more. And the trees? Most in the higher elevations are being killed off by some disease or insect or combination of the two. The pollution helped the massacre along by weakening the trees making the unable to fight the onslaught. Somehow, I don't think the Great Smokies are what they were when Roosevelt made the dedication. I have hiked many a mile and have seen the devastation, seen the lovely blue haze change to a gray smog . It saddens me. That Bush is going there for earth earth days is more evidence either of his hypocrisy or his denial and ignorance.

14. It's actually very pretty here
and I'll be damned if Bush ruins it here. My city used to be one of the top 10 dirtiest in the country but now we're very beautiful and have kept it pretty clean. Here's some photos: http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/photos/

20. Welcome to DU!!!
I hear what you are saying. It's still quite beautiful hear, but most of that beauty is either hidden behind all that smog and pollution, or relegated to my memory. The Smokies are still great, but they are seriously ill. Unfortunately, when Bush and his entourage visit, all they will see are the pretty mountains and valleys and trees and wildlife, and all his adoring fans will praise his every word. The end result will be Bush believing even more emphatically that his environmental policies are wonderful, and those who see him will probably start crediting him with putting the mountains there in the first place.

Makes me sick too. :puke:

He's visiting Cade's Cove on the TN side. Can we TN DU'ers arrange a protest? Bush at Earth Day is just TOO Orwellian!

16. remember the time his Earth Day photo-op got snowed out?
The media bus got lost and bogged down en route ... and Bush, shivering, had to eat his lunch in a trailer?

18. word is that * got all snippy with Karen Hughes ...
It was her idea that he do more environmental events to soften his image. After that snowy Adirondacks debacle, he took to teasing her, calling her "lima green bean" etc. -- not long after that she moved her family back to Texas.
