A ticking time bomb

Former "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes - who was sacked by CBS News over her role in last fall's President Bush-National Guard document flap - is returning the favor in an angry book to be published in November.

Mapes received a mid-six-figure advance from St. Martin's Press for "The Other Side of the Story," her memoir of the controversy that knocked Dan Rather out of the anchor chair and ended four other careers at CBS News.

According to Mapes' eye-popping book proposal, which I obtained yesterday, she'll rely on extensive notes and transcripts of her appearances before the Viacom-ordered investigative panel to embarrass and bludgeon her former bosses and others, including:

CBS President and Viacom Co-President Les Moonves, the husband of "Early Show" co-host Julie Chen: "Moonves demonstrated what has been joked about for years: that everything he knows about journalism has been sexually transmitted." ....

2. We need Dan Rather's take on how CBS has betrayed him also...
...but IO guess as long as he continues to work at CBS and draws his pension from CBS, he will have to abide by the non-disclosure agreements these fucking corporations force everyone to sign under strict reprisal threats never to say or write anything negative about their slave owners! Mary Mapes was screwed over, so I guess she has taken the hit and has nothing to loose.

CBS News President Andrew Heyward: "The architect of the cruel game. ... , they were there because Andrew didn't want to be. Then, if something went wrong, he could blame them." Later, Mapes claims in the proposal, Heyward visited the White House and "reportedly promised a high-ranking Bush adviser that the network would 'do better.'"

Former CBS News Senior Vice President West: In the midst of the controversy, she accompanied Mapes and Rather to Dallas for a hostile interview with Bill Burkett, the source of the disputed documents. "Seeing praying in a hotel room before the interview, reports to all of us, 'There is something very odd going on in there.' 'Betsy, welcome to Texas. They're praying.'"

Former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, co-chairman of the "Star Chamber," as Mapes calls it, "seemed oddly fascinated with my use of the word 'horse-.' I am not making this up."
Of the top players, only Rather - "my friend and colleague" - gets a valentine in Mapes' outline. She recalls "Dan's constant loyalty and phone calls when I was at my lowest points," and attributes his departure from the "Evening News" to Viacom's eagerness to fix its Janet Jackson and Howard Stern problems with the FCC and "settle its differences with an angry and vindictive administration."

Yesterday Heyward, who was said by a knowledgeable CBS source to be "scared s-less" by what Mapes' book might contain, told me: "I haven't seen the book proposal, and I have no comment on it. I don't want to read the proposal - or the book."

6. Oh wow
Sounds like it'll be a good book. Greg Palast had a good article where he talked about why they fired Mary Mapes and Rove went after her. Basically he was saying how it was because they didn't have control of CBS like the other networks and she would've talked about the election fraud and Rove couldn't have that so they set up the memo's for her to get. She probably knew the story was true because anybody who knows their basic Bush family 101 knows Bush was AWOL so that's probably why they ran with the story with all the Kerry Vietnam SBVT crap.
