DLC/New Democrats are telling members to vote FOR the Bankruptcy Bill
Per Atrios they just sent out an urgent memo to all New Democrats members saying

To: NDC Members

From: Reps. Ellen Tauscher, Ron Kind, Artur Davis and Adam Smith

Re: NDC Key Vote Alert!

Date: April 13, 2005

Tomorrow, the House will consider S. 256, The Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act. We write to let you know that final passage of the Bill will be a key vote for the NDC and to encourage you to support this common-sense, bipartisan legislation.

2. Corporate whores
This "common-sense, bipartisan legislation" is a frontal assault on the most economically vulnerable Americans. Any Democrat who votes for it ought to be drummed out of the party.

7. I do not know about DU DLCers but the spokesman for NDC said
I am also very much opposed to us being just the party of 'no.'

. . .

My constituents did not send me to Washington to vote no all the time. I could do that from my kitchen in Alamo, California. They sent me back here to be ready to work in a bipartisan way. Because the Republican majority does not take the effort or the opportunity to work with us to cure the bill does not mean I cannot say that if you pass it and I believe there are good things about this bill or important things about this bill I will support it.

14. I'm not a DLC defender (far from it, as most here know)
However, I just checked the DLC website and found nothing about this bill.

I search on bankruptcy and consumer protection. If anyone else wants to try, be my guest.

20. The TNR website has the article about the New Dems liking the bill.
I would have to look up the article, or you could do a search on it there.

It will not be televised, but when you hear the under-the-breath noises like "Who's going to stop us?" you know that ticket has been punched

6. That ain't the DLC.
Edited on Wed Apr-13-05 09:38 PM by Teaser
Let's keep our bogeymen straight. There is the NDC (New Democrat Coalition) a bunch of congresscritters who call themselves New Democrats. Now many of these people also support the DLC, but they're not identical.

And then there is the New Democrat Network (NDN), which started out as a DLC clone but has actually grown into a very good organization which is supportive of Democrats of *all* stripes. Simon Rosenberg heads the NDN, and distinguished himself by refusing to lambaste Dean and being quite supportive of grassroots Democratic activism.

8. Since the NDC votes for corporate greed each and every time so far
there is no important difference between the DLC and the DNC. The NDC only seems to have a few extra brain cells by not riling the grubby grassroots and "saying" they are "supportive".

10. We're starting a mini-uprising here in Ron Kind's district
in Wisconsin. He runs as a progressive, then he turns out to be one of the principle democratic proponents of this sell-out bill--all apparently because of $15,000 or so in campaign contributions from the banking and hospital industries. We elected him, and we will by God un-elect him if he votes for this turd.

22. Not true. The New Democrats are the DLC.
The NDN is Rosenberg's group, which sort of split off from the DLC. The New Democrat Coalition is at the DLC website.

23. Those filthy fucks!
Why don't they just get "I'm easy" tattooed on their foreheads? They are so desperate to be loved by someone that they will sell out at the drop of a hat. Especially one filled with corporate dollars. Don't worry, I am sure the Republicans will still respect them in the morning.:eyes:

26. The DLC OPPOSES the bankruptcy measure!
In case you need a source:

Per a March posting at http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?contentid=253241&kaid=131&subid=192

The Senate has just passed bankruptcy legislation that will force many regular citizens to assume greater responsibility for personal debt, even if they have lost their jobs or are victims of catastrophic health care conditions or identity theft.
