Yahoo: "Gibson 'planning film about John Paul II'"
Actor/director Mel Gibson is reported to be planning a film about Pope John Paul II.

Gibson courted controversy last year with his religious epic The Passion of the Christ.

Reports that the film, which enraged Jewish communities throughout the world for their portrayal in the movie, was endorsed by the Pope were later dismissed by his aides.

Gibson, who comes from a strict Roman Catholic background, apparently dispatched a film crew to Vatican City to capture crowd scenes at the late pontiff's funeral.

14. Pope John Paul will already be a St. by the time the film come out.
The second half will be about how much he suffered during his illness.

He'll have him gasping for breath and words on the balcony for 15 long minutes. Then we'll see in living color every detail of just what agony the body goes through during the dying process. WOW! Can't wait to see it! :sarcasm:

15. Well then, don't. It's not the first time Hollywood has taken liberty with
a biopic.

Gibson's a filmmaker and I can't think of one filmmaker who doesn't tell a story the way he wants others to see it.

BTW, the only Gibson-directed film I've seen is The Man Without a Face, and it was competent, but not terribly impressive.

36. I don't mind Gibson
movies such as Braveheart certainly weren't bad; I think it is idiotic to say they were simply because of his political affiliation.

25. ???
For that to be true, the government would have to be financing the film. Perhaps you can tell me how this is the case with Mel Gibson's films...

On the other hand, maybe Mel Gibson is just exercising his First Amendment rights...

"Gott Mit Uns"!! :puke:

I don't even care to explore whatever convoluted "logic" is behind the assertion of "For that to be true..." It bears no relationship I can detect whatsoever to my post or the nature of fascism itself.

3. I'd like to see a movie about John Paul THE FIRST
He served for 33 days and there has been some mystery about his death (murder?). He was known as the smiling Pope and was quite a contrast from Pope Paul VI.

5. oh, goody
I'm surprised by this - the Pope's story doesn't contain violence, sadism, beatings, beheadings, brutality or "action hero" car chase scenes. How will Mel get a woody from making this film? It doesn't contain any of his favorite themes.

16. I think there was a film starring Sam Neill about John Paul,
but I can't remember the name of it. Focused on John Paul's adult life before the papacy. I'm not much for that sort of thing, but Sam Neill is pretty good in whatever he does, and I seem to recall liking the movie.
Sorry for all the "can't remember/s" -- CRS strikes again (I think. Can't remember . . .)

And not a religious screed.

I think he's a good filmmaker. I still love Braveheart. And "The Patriot" was well-made even if the script was full of shit.

If Gibson decides to do a film on John Paul II, I bet it will be a documentary and will be pretty good.

No story, no character development, no heart, no reverence for the subject matter.

Just pain.

Edited on Wed Apr-13-05 02:30 PM by Pawel K
Most people in this world are familiar with the story. The movie was done to show the pain Jesus went through in his final days. If you need the story there are many other places you can look, maybe the bible, or movies based on it, would be a good place to start.

41. It failed at the most basic level for a movie.
There is no reason to feel anything for any of the characters without context.

While I and most people are familiar with the Bible, reading it is a great deal more insightful than watching that movie was.

But beyond that, it was poorly shot, dimly lit, and had clunky, unimpressive sets.

The acting was average at best, and there was little in the way of speaking. The Aramaic was a good idea, but it didn't really pan out to be as good as one might have hoped.

It was incredibly violent, probably more violent than the actual event was, and certainly more violent than the depiction in the Bible.

I was expecting something fantastic based on all the hype that Republicans gave it, or at least interesting.

It was neither. And worse, it turned Jesus, the most reknowned pacifist of all time, into a punching bag.

It, in a word, sucked.

27. Is Mel Gibson Catholic?
Or is that something you can buy?

Standing as I do in the far left field of the Catholic Church and not paying attention to the game as I'm sniffing the lawn daisies I picked, sometimes I just wonder.

Mel seems a little right-wing and apostate for my tastes, and I've heard Hollywood rumors that he behaves badly when he is away from his family.

For your information, there are more than 1.1 billion people on this earth that respected the pope greatly. Polish people, such as myself, especially. Frankly I would love to see a movie about him.

I swear, for the tollerance we preach some of you seem to be total hypocrites.

there has just been too many attacks on the Pope around here, mostly unfair, that it is really starting to piss me off and gets me a little heated at times.

However, I haven't heard him lately since I simply don't pay attention to what any celebrity says about politics, be it Gibson or Eminem. What I am saying is that he is a director, if he wants to make a movie about it I won't judge that movie based on his political affiliation, I will judge it based on the actual movie. I didn't start listening to Eminem because he made a anti-Bush song, I started listening to Eminem a long time ago because I actually liked the music. Nor do I think Jessica Simpson is a dumb bitch because she supports Bush, I just think she is a dumb bitch overall. ;)

and I guess I should keep an open mind, right? Mel might make a good movie about the Pope, you never know. I hope whoever makes it captures the Pope's love of all things - not just people. And his inclusiveness - regardless of religion, he believed we all worship the same god. :hi:
