Cons lose bid to stop Same-sex marriage (Canada news)
OTTAWA -- The Conservatives lost their bid to block the Liberals' same-sex marriage bill today. N-D-P and Bloc Quebecois M-P's joined with Liberals in voting 164-132 against the Tory amendment. About three dozen Liberal M-P's voted with the Conservatives. The Tories wanted a bill that would reaffirm the traditional definition of marriage as an exclusive union between one man and one woman. Most constitutional lawyers agree that would undermine the rights of gays and lesbians. But Conservative Leader Stephen Harper argued that Canada's highest court still hasn't ruled on that question. Tory Jason Kenney says the matter is not over for the Conservatives. He says should they form the next government, they would bring their position to Parliament for a free vote. Kenney says their motion would have passed had Liberal cabinet ministers been free to vote their true feelings.

Canadian whenever I can. When we were discussing feral cats earlier today I spent half and hour looking for a good link to 'the cats of parliament hill'. I am terrible. I was speaking only for myself.
Gay marriage in Canada is something to celebrate. Not a vanity thing at all. An 'about time' thing.
As Rick Mercer said: "Canada has agreed to give gay partners marriage benefits going all the way back to 1980 - WHEN GAYNESS WAS INVENTED!!!"
