The collapse of the networks
Today I heard this report on NPR about how the MSM is losing clout and viewers.

We are becoming our own news gathering organizations. It speaks of how the internet exposes more to the news than the MSM We are the media.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4583366

Here's the description of the story.

All Things Considered, April 8, 2005 · Network television audiences are down as cable, the Internet and a host of other new technologies emerge; and marketers are shifting their dollars accordingly. The media world faces an interim of chaos before a new order is determined. The co-host of On the Media delivers his take.

1. Network TV and newspapers...
They are as relevant and timely as a horse and buggy or Victrola. When the local Birmingham News bugs me to subscribe, I let them know I can read unedited news 24/7 on the internet directly from the wire services.

3. I firmly believe that the MSM will be dead within the next 10 years.
So the propaganda in the newspapers and on cable TV don't really bother me all that much.

As you said: we're our own news gathering organizations. Why do we need to wait for television to interpret something that happened when a guy who was actually there can just update his blog?

6. Broadcast news no longer puts out big bucks
to keep overseas offices open.
Networks took a loss on operating the news but were proud of the public service they provided.
The bottom line took over and at what cost?
They barely covered the conventions last year.
Cable news sensationalism took over and they conceeded to it.

7. Most everything about the "new technologies"
rely on MSM sources.

Where else is anyone going to get any 'news'?

There are NO 'new technologies' that have news bureaus to report on anything. The 'new technologies' rely on the established infrastructure.

What happens when that infrastructure collapses? Not that I care a whit about ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc. However, these are the "corporations" that have provided the 'bureau chiefs' that have the money to provide them.

This is a conundrum that is synonymous with the Bush Takeover. Our media is unreliable, but we rely on them.

Maybe the BBC could takeover the U.S. media...? Even so, that would leave us with little choice.

The collapse of the established media is paralleling the collapse of democracy in this country.

This is not an easy solution.

Baghdad burning gives us a real picture of what it is like in Baghdad and tells us the truth about those Iraqi national guards. They are our embeded reporters.

I first heard of the details of the payoff to Poland for their joining the coalition of the billing was from the son of a Polish military official. Part of the deal was moving some US defense jobs there.

10. Big difference between MSM and "the media"
On the internet you'll hear about things not heard on the MSM. Many of these stories source back to "the media", but often not to the Main Stream Media.

Non mainstream media are for instance Democracy Now, Mother Jones, Greg Palast, local Papers and radio stations, European sources (BBC, newspapers). They carry stories usually not heard on CNN etc.

11. Glad to hear it.
The MSM is nothing more than the white house propaganda machine peppered with distracting info-tainment pieces. Its a dispicable joke.
