| YAY! SCUMBAG Horowitz hit with a PIE! |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 04:24 PM by UdoKier
Activist hit by pie at Butler lecture
David Horowitz, president of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, had just started a lecture at Butler when he was hit by a pie. -- Kevin O'Neal / For The Star By Kevin O'Neal kevin.oneal@indystar.com
April 7, 2005
A conservative activist who criticizes what he calls the leftist domination of college campuses was struck with a pie Wednesday night at Butler University.
David Horowitz, president of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, had just started a lecture at Butler when he was hit.http://www.indystar.com/articles/8/235034-8678-009.html He he. And notice how they call him just an "activist", rather than writer or scholar? Too bad the pie wasn't full of horse snot.

Would THEY be justified in pie-ing Al Franken, Mike Malloy, Al Gore, etc.? No, we'd be outraged.
There is still plenty of debate in this country. We are not going to convince people that we're right by throwing pies at their side.

You would be outraged because of some sort of purist notions about civility or nonviolence.
I'd be outraged because it would offend my sensibilities about kicking the little guy when he's down. Franken, Randi, etc. represent the tiniest sliver of the media, which is OVERWHELMINGLY ultra-right-wing and corporate-controlled, as is our government.
Look, all I'm saying is that *******************. All avenues of legal recourse against a government and corporate propaganda machine gone mad have been pretty much destroyed at this point.
The fact that I have to continually censor myself shows just how little freedom we really have left...

the right thinks that the media is overwhelmingly leftist.
It's not about who's right and who's wrong - it's about how we address problems. Assaulting people is not a good way to either convince others of the rightness of your position, or be an example.

We have gone from a pro-war, centrist, pro-corporate media, to a corporate-owned, pro-war, ultra-right-wing media in only 15 years or so. If right wingers are too blind to see it then there is nothing I can do to help them. It's as plain as the nose on one's face.

if it was my choice, i'd round up the mediawhores, and have them tried and sentenced to death and taken out and hanged. fini. Until these bastards act humanely among themselves, and that will not happen until they feel powerless, they are a danger to life itself. So a quick disposition is best for everybody....as far as elected officials, guilt would have to be proven (no capital punishment for public servants) then jail until they find jesus.... the nazipoos will destroy free speech. They always have. Paul Wellstone (a lawmaker) was murdered, and his family was murdered with him, because he inconvenienced the piggy.....that's what the mediawhores aid and abet...kerry, clinton, al gore, even michael moore, won't say it, but if it quacks like a bushevik, and stinks like one, it's a bushevik....

We, being humanity. Always have thrown food at each other when we're ticked, probably always will.
I see nothing intrinsically wrong with it, actually. Getting hit by a cream (or apple, or rhubarb) pie is nothing threatening.
I'd be willing to bet our side would leap into a critique on angle and trajectory, as well as the contents of the pie themselves:
Was the pie well-baked? Was the flavor correct?
And so on.
Someone else on DU said in another thread something about how being indignant about getting pied only makes one lose yet more face. I would tend to agree- getting all huffy about getting a pie in the face is really very childish.
I could say the same about pie-ing, except that there's a strong tradition for this specific act.

it's a difference of degree. I'm trying to find the dividing line. If assaulting them with a pie is OK, are there other forms of assault that are acceptable?
Personally, I think we shouldn't assault people because of their ideas. We certainly wouldn't like it done to us.

One of the professors smeared by Horowitz received death threats. Horowitz pretty much told him to "get over it."
I agree that we should not assault people for their beliefs. However, I have a hard time feeling sorry for individuals who incite violence against others and end up wearing a pie.

It's actually very effective non-violent symbolic act that people attach positive, innocent feeling to (ever seen an American comedy with a pie/food fight?) and has nothing to do with assault - no matter what the courts say.
And yes, it stops and should stop at pie-ing with innocent, childish positive vibes, power and pompouss asses fear nothing like ridicule and loosing face, they don't understand pie-ing and don't know how to react, so they react in ways guaranteed to loose even more face.
Against real violent acts they know how to react, that is with more violence, violence is something they feel home at.

While I would much prefer another way of expressing dissent, when just about every avenue is closed off to people, they will FIND a way to express themselves. It's not mature, no, not at all. And you won't find me doing it.
But I'm not sure I can blame those doing it. I understand the feeling. You can't even get close enough to register your dissent verbally, forget having any kind of discourse with them. You're left with pies and eggs. And most of them, you can't even get close enough to do THAT.

Can you not write and speak freely? Does somebody have Al Franken tied up in a closet? Is Noam Chomsky gagged and bound?
Despite the hysterical claims of some, people are still free to speak in this country, and do so daily.
Assaulting people because of their ideas is just wrong, despite the personal little frisson of pleasure we get when we see it happen to someone we despise. But if you extrapolate the idea to the big picture, I think you'd be aghast to find this become a common occurrence, because I guarantee you it won't only be used against right wing idiots.
Personally, I don't want to see Madeline Albright or Rosetta Scott King or Robert Byrd assaulted in any way.
The whole thing makes us look like childish assholes, and in fact, if we cheer this behavior, we ARE childish assholes.

Coulter and Horowitz's basic premise?
Horowitz goes around from campus to campus claiming that the colleges are leftist bastions that indoctrinate rather than educate, and will not allow conservative voices to be heard. So, he gets invited to speak which disproves his point, and then gets stopped from speaking which makes his point.
He said the college would not welcome or listen to a different point of view and surely enough when he comes to deliver one, he gets things thrown at him.
He will get years of mileage out of this incident.
Same with Coulter. She couldn't have gotten better propoganda value if she paid for it.

Some people with ludicrously twisted perceptions that they try to foist off on regular folk, people who slither to the auditorium on their bellies, who stand up and lie and lie and lie with lies piled upon lies, bigotry upon bigotry, hate upon hate, it is not sufficient to argue with them. They do not deserve the respectful treatment of arguing with their bizarre, lie-filled polemics. What they deserve is a disrespectul, humiliating demonstration of exactly how contemptable they are.
No, they are not worth shooting. They are not worth bombing. Those acts are far too serious for these worms, not to mention the consequences of those sorts of batteries.
Al Pieda is what they deserve and I cheer any time one of the rat bastards get a little, tiny bit of what they have coming.

My parents pay really good money to see the Pittsburgh Lecture Series every year. It's about ten events that have politicans of all stripes, authors, directors, etc give lectures and answer questions. I go to two or three of the ones that interest me each year (saw Spike Lee...saw Vonnegut...saw Tom Wolfe...).
I would be really pissed if I spent $50 and some asshole hit the speaker with a pie.

their right to free political speech, which to me is an outrage. Taking away their constitutional right is worse than an assault.
And they were picked for their political views which makes it even worse.
I see this as very bad.
I hope the law starts reacting seriously to it.
BTW - how often should a person like Buchanon be pied? Should he be thrown at everywhere he attempts to speak? Or just once a month maybe? Does he have a right of free political speech maybe within a window of once a month, and then he will have stuff thrown at him all the other times, or should his speech be shut down all together? or should he just be kept guessing, never knowing which of his political events will be ruined?

but how is this different from Mann Coulter using College Puke thugs to "remove" anyone who disagreed with her from the room? People need to grow up and get a sense of humor. I wouldn't be outraged if someone hit Dean, or Clark, or Kerry, or Moore, or whoever from our side with a pie--it's not exactly going to hurt them, unless it's got rocks in it or something, and I'm sure our side would know enough to laugh about it rather than get huffy and indignant like the right.

The message I'm getting is that if you are on the riught of the political spectrum, you have no right to speak without getting things thrown at you.
This seems like an attack aimed right at the right to free speech. Hopefully opinion makers on the left will soon take a stand to stop this before it gets even more out of hand.
Beingg against political free speech is not a place I want to be.
