304 U.S. soldiers ordered killed by Pentagon in Iraq
Not sure if I find this a credible source.... You decide

http://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=4/6/2005&...

TEHRAN (MNA) About 304 recalcitrant U.S. soldiers have been killed by the Pentagons special team, intelligence sources in Iraq have revealed.

The sources quoted high-ranking U.S. officers as saying that since the U.S. occupation of Iraq in March 2003 more than 304 U.S. military forces have been executed in spurious clashes at the behest of army commanders and with the knowledge of the Pentagon.

The bodies of these soldiers have been sent to their families and announced as forces who have been killed in the fight against terrorists, the Mehr News Agency correspondent in southern Iran has learnt.

The soldiers ordered killed were mainly among those who suffered mental disorders and protested against the massacre of Iraqi civilians and asked Who were they fighting for.

Reports say the number of soldiers who have injured or maimed themselves to flee from the scene of war in Iraq are on the rise, and new revelations show that this number has exceeded to 2,100 over the past two years.

The U.S. Army medical dispensary announced four months ago that more than 6,000 soldiers serving in Iraq suffer from severe mental problems. The reports have also revealed that some of these soldiers tend to kill innocent Iraqi civilians without any particular reason in order to reduce their mental pains.

2. Good grief--the US army doesn't kill American soldiers
who protest the war. It just locks them up in mental hospitals.

21. Nah, they don't bomb and shoot reporters and rescued hostages either,
do they?

And, they would never lie about an injured female soldier being a POW when she really wasn't, would they? And then pretend to rescue her after failing to kill her when the iraqis attempted to 'give her' back?

Nah.. it can't be true.

37. And they wouldn't kill an Al Jazeera news team right off the roof of a
hotel while they were covering the war in Baghdad (from an aircraft, no less).

Why do I instantly believe this?

If this is true, then we finally have Dubya by the short and curlies.

8. This administration would do it!
Saw a report on Frontline about how mental health problems are treated in Bush's military. Nothing is beneath Dubya. If he thought he could control dissent by getting the dissenters killed, he would do it.

20. I mean that you desperately want it to be true.
Of course you'd like something to really nail Bush with. This story seems like a stretch, but when you really want something to be true, you can trick yourself into being accepting.

It's psychology; not mind-reading.

5. I can believe the part about self-inflicted injuries
I personally knew several people who 'accidentaly' broke an arm or other bone to avoid going to on an NTC rotation. (national training center in California, you live in the desert for a couple months.) and thats nowhere near as bad as Iraq.

Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 03:37 PM by new_beawr
I knew a guy that worked for the "State Department" in Viet Nam. It was his job to do this sort of thing............

On Edit: This doesn't mean that we're doing the same thing now. Also, he killed people in Nam for reasons other than those cited. Also, I don't believe a fucking thing coming from the Iranian Press.

Nevertheless - we have the capacity to perform some pretty unspeakable shit............

19. Sure
I wouldn't say grunts, or at least he didn't. More like, well, in a war there's a lot of organized crime-type activity taking place underneath the surface both by us and by the South Vietnamese. This would get in the way of conducting a war and would have to be dealt with. There were also instances of political assassinations of provincial officials that had annoyed the US. It is kinda similar to the Apocalypse Now scenario or the Colonel Flagg character on MASH, only not a satirical buffoon............

9. Frag or be fragged!
I believe it! One of the very first incidents of this War was the guy who threw grenades into a tent full of officers, & I'd bet that sentiment is growing even stronger, by the day, as they are asked to stay longer & perform impossible duties, against an enemy they cannot even identify.

There are even efforts to identify the families of soldiers who are against this War, so it doesn't surprise me that they would be eliminating some of them, before they can bring the truth back home.

10. While I believe a great many things about the evil regime...
...currently in power in America, I find this unsubstantiated report to be a stretch.

Unnamed 'intelligence sources'? Until there's documentation, evidence, or someone actually on-the-record on this, it has no more validity than if I were to say something like, "Administration sources have revealed that George W. Bush regularly dines on the brains of babies. He is reported especially to like them dipped in Texas-style barbecue sauce. Vice President Cheney declined to return our calls requesting confirmation or comment. However, another official speaking under anonymity said Mr. Cheney was busy having sex with a corpse."

No proof. Or to put it another way, just because our own government engages in propaganda doesn't mean I'm going to buy into the same shit from the other side.

15. I hope this isn't true, But...
...they have been deploying a lot of solders with PTSD and other with Mental Health problems who normally would have been judged un-fit.

I do remember hearing about a very high number of "Suicides" back in 2003.

Here's a site that that keep detailed records of KIA's and other causes of death.

18. I think we need to be critical of this
Sometimes we get out of hand and almost want bad shit to happen in Iraq so that we can criticize. That's perverse. I'm not saying I don't think our government might do this, but I don't trust the Iranian press any more than government propaganda.

22. An obvious Iranian propaganda source --
but that doesn't mean there isn't a grain of truth behind it. The best lie is one that is mostly true.

Mental illness? Yes. Self-inflicted injuries? No doubt. American soldiers killing other American soldiers? Extremely unlikely, except in individual cases of unreasoning aggression on the battlefield. I knew a guy, years ago, in the Marines who told me of a patrol in VN - his Sargent ordered one of his men to take point after a firefight and the marine flat out refused. The Sargent shot him, then ordered someone else to take his place. They reported him as KIA.

True? Don't know. Maybe just a story for the newbie. But as I heard it while drinking at the Enlisted Club, I believed it. And I certainly met enough Marines I thought capable of it, in the heat of anger.

Which instantly casts a lot of doubt on the veracity of this report. Of course, I also thought the whole idea of selling arms to Iran and using the profits to fund the Contras in Nicaragua sounded pretty screwy the first time I heard it.

1) The story is garbage.
2) The Alcoa "I hate America" crowd is going to chime up.
3) It makes DU look bad. Alot of people troll hear. Wouldn't want them all to think we are nuts.

33. Three reasons why this thread should stay....
1) the story may not be completely garbage
2) the "Love it or Leave it" crowd is going to chime up
3) one thread is not going to make DU look bad...it looks worse when a thread gets killed because others can state that DU censors posts it doesn't like.

39. This just sets off all kinds of alarm bells.
I know people like to set us up to look bad. This is an easy setup.

EBK throws this bomb out, with the standard Faux disclaimer (You decide!), and doesn't respond to any of it. That kind of behavior tends to breed suspicion of your motives, FYI.

Is the government capable of doing this and hiding it? I wouldn't dismiss the possibility out of hand.

Is there any way to verify the peripheral info (the Army revelation about the 6,000 soldiers suffering from severe mental disorders, for starters)?

Personally, I think they could be doing it, but I would like better evidence than an Iranian newspaper (with as much reason to lie about it as our own newspapers).

And EBK: Welcome to DU! :hi:

And Trojan Man: Nice username. Welcome to DU as well! :hi:
