Who was the Pope in 1964?
I was newly married and living in New York. I believe I saw "a Pope" in a parade coming down Third Avenue in the fall of that year. I always thought it was Pope John Paul II, but I must be wrong, since he was not selected until 1979....

So who did I see? This day coincided with a difficult passage in my own life and I'd like to clear it up in my mind.

If you're a Catholic scholar, perhaps you know. Or a site which will answer this question. Thanks!

Who was it? And was he in New York in the fall of 1964?

12. Hide it or alert on it...
...but DON'T post on these threads only to mock others who are clearly moved by this event. Jeez... :eyes:

At least for today.

I wasn't mocking anyone and apologize if it seems that way. You must have this thread confused with another.

I think this was a good topic for discussion. Unless a moderator suggests a change, I'm leaving it.

I'm going to have lunch now.

Have a good day, Cooley Hurd. Oh, but you probably won't see this if you've hidden it :-)

10. OK, thanks a lot. I appreciate it very much.

I tried to see him through a telescope. It was a bright fall day, and I didn't have the solar filter on. I looked directly at the sun and burned the retinas of both eyes.

Maybe it was a sign, but it was very difficult experience. It did not hurt, but I had bad retinal bleaching. I still have burn streaks in both eyes.

up Third Avenue to the U.N. plaza. Memory is fascinating. I had the Pope and the year wrong, but could hardly forget the event.

Appreciate all of your help.

What did Pope Paul VI look like? I have no memory of that at all.

Edited: I see the photo and do recall his papacy now.

31. Pope John XXIII died June 3, 1963...
the "Good Pope," Angelo Roncalli--we lived in Europe at the time due to my father's job. I remember him crying by the radio, bringing us the American station from Frankfurt. I ran up two flights of stairs and prayed by my bed for the pope to live.

Six months later, we received the news of President Kennedy's death the same way.

My Dad had left the R Catholic church as a young man--he fell in with Protestant chaplains in the army in WWII. But he sobbed when he heard of the passing of that Christian man. What a breath of the Holy Spirit John let into the church, after 500 years.

God will provide, despite the human penchant for politics.
