Republicans Pull the Plug
I have to admit that I was not lock-step on either side of the Shiavo controversy. I still have my doubts about whether or not it was right to remove the feeding tube but I don't want to argue about that. What I want to say is this:

Republicans are getting all up in arms and bent out of shape over this case and yet they "pull the plug" on millions of people every time they vote Republican! How many essential social services were nixed by GOP legislation? What about benefits and programs for disabled? All the social cuts for the poor? How many people without health insurance will ultimately pay the price with their lives or the lives of their children? How many people will be malnourished and suffer health problems, perhaps even leading to death, because of social services cuts? Who ends up dying when they "pull the plug" and allow their government to wage war on innocent people all around the world? And I reject any argument that proclaims the poor people got there on their own and it's their own fault.....Terri Shiavo got to where she was on her own by succumbing to her own ego and starving herself through bulimia.

The only difference IMO, is that pulling the plug on Terri has immediate and visual results. Pulling the plug by voting Republican means you don't have to see or even hear (if you don't want to) the death and harm you have caused.

As usual, the self-righteous right does not see the mote in their own eye.

who are not in a vegetative state but just
trying to make ends meet.

save the fetus, hurt the child
save the rich, hurt the middleclass

5. And I totally forgot....
how they pull the plug when they vote to allow more pollution. They pull the plug when they cut consumer protections of our food and drugs. The list goes on and on as does their hypocrisy.

2. I agree...to a point.
It's not "ego" that drives a person to bulimia. It's a psychological disorder that needs treatment (yet another treatment that Michael failed to get for her...yeah, right, as if you can hide the smell of vomit, or hide all the dental problems that result from stomach acid eating away the enamel!).

6. You're right
I was only making a point. I am also angry at how society makes women feel they must starve themselves to be attractive, but that's a whole other rant.

Many of the poor suffer from psychological disorders and that's the reason they are where they are, but the right does not allow them that excuse, so I will not allow that excuse either, just for this argument.

7. She was probably bulimic before she met Michael
You could make the same argument about the parents.

3. In particular, this could start a discussion on Health Care
If Terry didn't have family willing to pay for her car, if it was a hospital adminstrator removing the tube instead of a Michael Schiavo would that make any difference to Republicans? Or at that point is it time to let nature take its course.

8. They are totally oblivious to the facts
I do not think that most Republican voters actually pay attention to the issues. They listen to sound bits and think that they are informed. However, they do not bother to scratch the surface or do some research. For example, they praise the Republicans for being strong on national security while either completely ignoring or being completely ignorant of the fact that members of the Bush Administration outed a CIA agent.

In this case, they are hearing about "poor Terri" and reacting. They have either ignored, explained away, or remained ignorant to the fact that if Terri Schiavo had been a poor woman in Texas in the exact same condition, the hospital would have had a legal right to pull the plug on Schiavo thanks to a bill signed by Governor Bush in 1999. They are also ignoring the impact that Republican legislation has on sick people and their families.
