3. Don't know if you've been following this mess but we were set
to execute the first person in New England in nearly 40 years - he gave up his right to appeal (a move Dems have called State Sponsored Suicide - and rightly IMO) and now this. Go Mike Lawler (Judicial Chair).

5. ct's house is currently in session
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 03:39 PM by cassandra uprising
and they're debating house bill 6012 which would in effect abolish the death penalty in ct. state rep mike lawlor (sta-ven in the hiz-ouse!) has just given one of the most eloquent anti-death penalty speeches i've ever heard. he is the chair of the state's judiciary committee and he is now getting grilled by other representatives.

for more info on the bill go to http://cgalites/2005/ba/2005HB-06012-R000040-BA.htm

12. the house is going to debating for a while
i got a feeling they will be debating for a long time before they take it to vote. they haven't debated the penalty in ten years so you know everyone is going pass the mic on this issue. (they don't have to worry about going up for re-election until next year.

6. Please keep us apprised, ok? I hope it's abolished in CT. And I wish..
that Illinois would be the next state. We have a moritorium on the death penalty here (since George Ryan was Governor). Our current Governor, Rod Blagojevich, has retained the moritorium indefinitely.

23. the governor won't pass it if it makes it out of the house
it would be political suicide for her.

i don't mean to get hopes up, but it's unreal that they are taking this bill up in a state like ct.

the judiciary committee has also raised a civil unions bill. it's been quite a session.

20. it's insane
i think i remember some poll being done that 80% of folks in ct support the death penalty. i don't think there is the political will to support abolishing the death penalty but it's still being taken up by the state legislature.

and i have to go to a stupid rehearsal tonight.

:puke:

25. Then we'll just have to elect even MORE Dems next time
and over-ride her veto.

It still sends an important message, and puts her on the line for a position, even if it doesn't get past her veto.

26. UPDATE: didn't make it
My (Dem.) rep. was among those voting against it -- argh.

From what I read this morning, though, it did better than similar attempts have in the past.

Makes me wonder where all the church groups were this time. They sure have the conservative churches and the RCC (biggie in CT) turning out in force when they talk about civil unions. Apparently, two people marrying is far more of a threat than putting a person to death.

27. lawlor had press conference with religious leaders in jan.
and my RCC parish had petitions set up for folks to sign abolishing the death penalty. there are a few non religious groups that galvanized some action like the ct network to abolish the death penalty and not in my name.

as i left work (the capitol) some days, rep dyson (new haven) wore a huge sand which broad sign that called for a repeal of the death penalty. it's a been pretty intense.

the legislature is tackling a lot of controversial legislation this year and i can't help but wonder what kind of concessions are being made in the back rooms. we have very progressive leadership in the house, it'll be interesting to see if the denial of this bill will have any impact on the civil unions bill.

28. I suspect you're right
I know my state senator is very strongly in favor of marriage rights. I don't know about this rep.

I can't help but wonder about the back rooms, too. Keep us informed as you can!
