White folks should not listen to rap
University Chronicle

---snip---
Why do white people listen to hip-hop and rap music? Last year I lived in a residential hall, and at first I thought the entire floor was filled with black students. Hip-hop and rap music were played constantly.

My comments are not meant to be racist. I just do not believe white people should listen to hip-hop and rap music. Nor do I believe blacks should listen to alternative, heavy metal and rock music.

If anything, white students who attempt to use black slang and wear baggy pants look and sound ridiculous. Maybe no one has pointed that out to white students in America. So I am.

I ave no right to tell anyone what they should or should not listen to, but I do have a right to express my views on this subject. And I believe whites should stick to music by white artists.
---snip---

157. I have to wonder why the OP posted an Alan Keyes wanna be article
This college kid sounds like a Republican in this article as well as a couple of his other articles.

He certainly does NOT represent the majority of the Black community.

notadmblnd:

How many Black racists do you know that are members of a Hate group or participate in promoting widespread discrimination or institutionalized discrimination?

Also, what do you mean, you know "by marriage?" I don't think I'm understanding your post very well. ;)

99% of the people I know and know of, who are racist and/or are in power positions are white. Bush and his entire klan comes to mind.

89. What we have is an opinion piece
appearing in a newspaper. How do we know the writer is even black. This could easily have been written by someone not black who just objected to hearing black music and seeing whites wearing the kind of clothes that some black wear. The fact that he questions how whites can know that much about the lives of black people means nothing. That could easily have been thrown in as a blind. We have no way of knowing that the writer is an African American. I'm rather suspicious.

It may well be a white writer. The examples he uses "whazzup" and the baggy clothes sounds like a white voice (pov) as they are very stereotypical.

The search feature here is handy to, to get some insight into posters. It's relevant to consider who posted this and why they posted it. ;)

Not that it excuses the obvious racism. If the author was white, it would not likely be printed given St. Cloud's abhorrent history.
Stearns County has more than its share of white power militia types.

And he obviously hasn't been to a hip-hop concert lately, or he would know that hip-hop draws a diverse crowd that is appreciated by the artists.

Just goes to show that racism comes in all forms from all types.

29. That simply proves the author is a jerk.
A greeting was extended to him and he blew it off.

If he accepted the friendliness of the offer, he might've found a receptive ear to his complaints about what FORM such greetings take.

But no, he had to be a jerk.

141. Granted, I was remarking on a side point. Nonetheless...
... the author has chosen this means of communication to express his views.

Regardless of who agrees or disagrees with his views, his manner of communicating these views sucks. They do not encourage dialogue or exploration and understanding.

His snubbing attitude shows in both his response to an offered greeting and his rant on the social containment of music.... an organic human art that IMHO can never be contained for long.

33. Meh
Well, if you need a less race-centric reason not to listen to rap, most rap just plain sucks. It's moronic, top-forty shit completely devoid of any musical quality or creativity. It's just some dumbass in a FUBU jacket talking about his bitches and/or ho's. It's boring to listen to, it's uncreative, it's all been done before, and it just encourages a culture of gang violence, drug use, and intolerance against women, caucasians (ok, we kinda deserve it, but whatever), and homosexuals. It's liquid shit for your CD player. And I'm a 16 year old from the suburbs, so I see plenty of this pretend "ghetto" culture. Kids that live in the suburbs but somehow seem to think that the parking lot outside of starbucks is their "hood". I see these nimrods every day at school wearing their bling-bling and calling everybody "dawg" and I just wanna slap the bastards. I see some dumbass walking down the hall saying "yo yo yo, wassup ma nigga?" and it's hard to reconcile that with the fact that I just saw him exit his mother's Lexus while she reminded him that his piano lesson was at six.

Sorry for the rant there.

On the other hand, I do like a little bit of old-school hip hip...NWA, Public Enemy, Dr. Dre...that stuff actually has some musical creativity in it, and their songs are actually written with some social conscience...Public Enemy was the first rapper to really write protest songs. It's pretty good stuff. But yeah, as for "Fitty Cent", I would enjoy watching a candy shop blow up with him in it.

I agree that the current state of hip-pop that permeates the airwaves is complete milquetoast, but please refrain from disparaging the art in Toto simply because of your ignorance.

well, maybe if they are low enough in the standings, they can pick up a good draft pick next season....their "big man" is missing.

I guess I should return that 50 Cent album I bought, but I can keep that Marilyn Manson.

Oh, and there goes my Ella, Miles Davis, and the rest of my jazz collection. I'll keep the classical, since Mozart and Beethoven were white.

What a stupid argument. Maybe he should be a little less of a jerk, and maybe expand his mind a little.

BTW I do think the baggy pants looks stupid, on everyone, no matter what their race.

And I've seen them in concert once (my 18th birthday). I would have seen them on my 20th birthday (I still have the tickets), but that was the year they canceled the tour.

The last album was such a throw back to Paul's Boutique. And they seem to have an almost timeless quality, you never get tired of them.

42. I think the kid has a couple of good points wrapped in a fallacious
argument.

His couple of good points are that white kids tend to embrace rap as though it is embracing the black culture. It isn't, even though it may be a PART of the black culture.

His other decent point is that "whassup bro" is really a thoughtless way to greet a person of another color that you may or may not know. It's pretty disrespectful to immediately assume that because a person is black, they wanna "jive" with you.

His fallacious argument is that white people do this because they listen to rap.

It's wrong. White people do it either because they don't know how to behave or they are being stupid.

I think it's ridiculous for whites to attempt to "own" the Black culture or pretend to know it, as Blacks do. I do think he went too far, attempting to make this point, by stating whites should not listen to Rap or Hip Hop. Certainly, we can have appreciation for other cultures.

I have to wonder what's up with all of these exception to the rule threads we are seeing: 'Christians are being persecuted,' 'Women are complaining too much about sexism,' 'A Black being racist'

What's next today? 'Gays are oppressing straights?'

The fact is, for every article authored by a Black, that apppears to be racist, there are millions of articles authored by whites that are riddled with white supremacy.

Let's put this in perspective, Blacks are not victimizing whites. Racism against whites is not a horrific social ill as it is against people of color.

White Privelege = "get on with that crazy talk" (or my favourite "Oh yeah, well I'm a white man and ain't got NOTHING. I mean, I'm even poor, and we ALL know that white people can't have privelege if they're POOR...poor is just for black and brown-not-black people)

Reparations for Holocaust Victims & Families = sound judgement
Reparations for Descendants of Slaves = Whaaa?? NO ONE in *MY* family was a slave-holder. I mean, what are we gonna do, just TAX all the white folk? What about black people that moved here after the Civil War? What about Dominicans? What about Africans? What about Black People who have white ancestors? What about White people who have Black ancestors? What about the white people who moved here after the civil war? What about European Americans? What about deaf-mute Russian immigrants who never even KNEW black people existed until they read this very thread? Do I get money? I have a black friend! What about the black people who never had children? Do Rich Black Celebrities get as much money as poor black folks. See, there's no way to do it fairly, so it shouldn't be done at all. I'm around teens and college age kids (white and black) every day and I don't know anyone who uses that as a greeting to another person regardless of color. Maybe 5 years ago, but definitely not now. The white kids don't dress like they do to try to "be" black. They dress like that because it's the accepted fashion of the day. They don't use the language they do because it's "black slang". They talk the way they do because it is the accepted slang of their generation. Dude needs to get over himself a little.

Interesting, that someone posted an article by an Alan Keyes wanna be and numerous people start frothing at the mouth to call this black kid a racist.

He certainly represents the majority voice of the Black community. :eyes:

I'm not suprised by this and I have my opinion on the intent here after reading posts by this OP.

I did a search and read another article by this college kid who was criticizing MLK Jr and defending the confederate flag, he is most likely a Republican and possibly white, although he claims not.

Yeah, and NOBODY should listen to Paganini, because that sounds like some guy who's hung like a mule butt-raping a cat...

Only thing worse than a Music Critic with no Cred is a RACIST Music Critic with no Cred.

I always thought that the neatest thing about music was that it can transcend racial and cultural "lines".

he's bi-racial (or is that another thing the writer thinks whites and blacks shouldn't mix?) Should I tell him only to listen to white rappers? Tell him he can only bang his head to (who's the one guy that Lisa Bonet was married to) black heavy metal artists?

Should we not be allowed to listen to Gospel, Jazz and the Blues? Rock and Roll was derived from R&B and rap from both of those. What kind of logic goes on in peoples heads that they've convinced themselves that people should have something else that divides them in this world. Music has historically be one thing that does bring people together.

110. true dat
all you need to hear is an E True Hollywood story in which some cracker ass cracker says "it's the bomb" and you know that term's over with. Ever see a frat boy destroy the entire oeuvre of Parliament Funkadelic, simply by dancing to it? I have.

The author is clearly being absurd in his recommendations (i.e., white people should only listen to "white music"), primarily because neither music not people fit neatly into such categories. However, if the author is commenting on the commercialization of African American cultural forms, their capacity to be lifted from the cultural conditions in which they develop and in which they hold very specific social meanings, and transferred into a general form, in which their context and social meaning is lost, devalued, debased, then he is correct. Many (not all) white boys who pimp limp it up, talkin all hard and signifyin, are simply performing a minstrel show - temporary and unconnected to anything substantive in the black cultural forms out which the pimp limp and the value of signifyin emerged. Once these forms travel, they lose their value as both a defense mechanism and point of cultural production in African American communities. On the plus side, however, these forms can attack white privilege at its base: the performance of whiteness is shown to be just that, a performance. This doesn't get you out of the problem of white dominance (which, yes, of course, continues to exert its full and terrible force), but it chips away at the foundation of the problem. So, upside and downside to the white boy shuffle, sho nuf.

Seriously though, this article is bullshit, because everybody's culture is up for grabs--wishing for no exchanges, but rather perfect racial "purity" when it comes to cultural experiences is a Nazi-like sentiment. I realize everyone hates white people because they have the power and are favored overwhelmingly, but this is like saying black people shouldn't listen to Bach--everyone's culture is up for grabs, and if an Inuit wants to get down to the Wiemar music scene ca. the 18th century, I don't see what the fuck his race or anything else has to do with it. Wishing to keep one's racial culture "pure" just gives me the worst vibes imaginable. Share and share alike is my stance.

112. College and music.
Man I remember a few years ago it seemed like I was always living next to someone who had to play their music so fucking loud you could literally hear it 20 doors down at the end of the hall word for word.

Sometimes I would crank my own in response for a few minutes to try and send a message but no dice. My third year I developed my fan policy. This was do to the RAs who were the loud music players drunk friends ie wouldn't discipline. I slept with a big box fan about about 2 feet behind me.. it was enough to drown out most of the noise. So I thank a box fan for helping me get decent grades in school by providing sleep.

The best was my senior year, the asshole next door to me like to play 2Pac... same song over and over.... California... knows how to party blah blah... This guy actually turns it on max, and LEAVES for the weekend with the damn thing on repeat...

Great times... I say colleges need to enforce the loudness of all music in school, too much negative impacts for the kids who are *gasp* actually learn and get better then Cs.

White people who marry non-white people are being ridiculous.

Non-white people who aspire to white-collar rather thank blue-collar careers are being ridiculous.

Black people who shop at places like Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstroms are being ridiculous.

Black people who go to college are being ridiculous. They should settle for being high school dropouts like everybody else.

Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 09:26 AM by Donald Ian Rankin
That whoever wrote this article intended it to be taken seriously? It looks to me like a - very subtle, and in my view very clever - piece of liberal-baiting.

"Nor do I believe blacks should listen to alternative, heavy metal and rock music" does not sound like a serious suggestion to me.

Given the response so far, if the author is indeed making a joke, I take my hat off to him - he's judged his piece to perfection. "One ray the more, one shade the less had half impaired the nameless grace". I think he will go far.

If he really is serious, then just ignore him, but unless there's other evidence to suggest that he is I think it unlikely.

From the follow-up:

"Anyone with a mind so closed that they truly believe individual races have ownership over specific genres of music need some Beatles and Ray Charles in their soul."

I couldn't agree more; hell, I was listening to Ray Charles three years before the Beatles broke on these shores; I was 10.

I'd add that anyone who can't be touched by the waltzes of Johann Strauss, John Phillip Sousa marches, or the incredible harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo is emotionally crippled.

189. I think there's a moral difference
between writing a piece which could reasonably be taken seriously and is genuinely outrageous, with the intention of outraging people for political reasons, and writing one which is only outrageous if people don't get the joke, *and which is sufficiently clearly not serious that anyone who takes it seriously is asking for what they get*, for the purposes of humour.

This one is borderline - it could *just about* be the work of someone who genuinely believes it, but I think the author has gone far enough towards the absurd to make it satire rather that incitation. The reason why I admire it is because it has, I think, passed that line by the smallest possible margin, and thus achieved its purpose very neatly.

It's not inconceivable that I'm wrong, and the author really did believe it and meant to be taken seriously or to stir up a serious debate, but I think it unlikely.

As politics, I agree with all the people who've said that it's not deserving of a second glance, let alone a long thread, but as humour I think it's really very clever indeed.

Other than the writers exercising the right to not respond to a greeting that he didn't care for, I find it hard to be sympathetic with any of his points. And since the vast majority of mainstream culture is produced by whites, he should turn off his TV and stay out of theaters to be consistent.
