Straw 'advised Blair against war'

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw made a last-minute plea to Tony Blair not to go to war in Iraq, according to claims in a new book about the conflict

The book says Mr Blair flatly disagreed with Mr Straw's suggestion.

"For all his public assertions that the intelligence was rock-solid, Blair had his doubts throughout," says the book.

Mr Kampfner argues that Mr Blair adopted a war policy largely because of his belief that the US should be supported in its hour of need following September 11.
