Anyone else thinking of doing this? Climate Prediction.net
Join the climateprediction.net experiment!
What is climateprediction.net?

The climateprediction.net experiment has been developed to allow a state-of-the-art climate prediction model to be run on home/ school/ work computers. By getting data from thousands of climate models, we will generate the world's largest climate prediction experiment.

Why?

Climate change, and our response to it, are issues of global importance, affecting food production, water resources, ecosystems, energy demand, insurance costs and much else. There is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth is likely to warm over the coming century, but estimates of how much vary hugely. By taking part in the climateprediction.net experiment you can help to improve scientific forecasts of 21st century climate.

1. I might...
I'm currently still dedicating my CPU to SETI but I think its time
for a change.
At least one of my rigs I should dedicate to something more useful than searching for ET.

2. I haven't done that but...
...I participate in reporting rare bird and "out of season" bird sightings for my area. It looks like breeding season has advanced 2 to 3 weeks for many species.

4. Interesting
I don't know where you are but the first sighting of the Grace's Warbler east of the Mississippi was recorded last week in Chicago.

We in my area are operating a late/early nesting and dates of migrant arrival and departure. Our Eastern Bluebird project observed the longest time span of active nestings yet for this past season.

We also have rcorded an influx of Tufted Titmice, Hooded Warblers, Acadian Flycatchers and Cerulean Warblers. Odd records of Loggerhead Shrike, Orchard Orioles, Bell's Vireo and Mockingbirds, also.

3. They say it's going to be months before a Linux port comes out...
...and they aren't going to start on a Mac port until they are done with the Linux one.

I hate that. It was the same with the SETI project. They should open source the client program so people can port it, but then use an authentication certificate to restrict access to only vetted clients.

I understand that they need to control the code to control the experiment, but I think we could get it ported to other platforms quicker out here.

Oh well. When they release one I can use, I'm in.

5. I probably will...
...with my office and lab computers, but not until they run the models under Linux.
