If Terri was a Lesbian
and had a partner for as many years as she has been married to Michael, her parents would have full autonomy. Her partner would have no say at all. So her parents would have been better off if Terri had been gay! Pretty ironic, no?

1. if Terri was a lesbian...
all those wingnuts would be pushing each other out of the way to be the one to pull the plug and send her to hell.

they seem real anxious to send someone to hell, but fight like hell to keep someone from heaven. why is that? are they afraid of overcrowding?

4. Well stated!
Irony is lost on the nutcases. The brainless, fighting for the braindead.

2. Careful
Next thing you know, Mr. Schindler will come out and tell us he swore that he saw Terri wink at a female nurse.

6. Your avatar...isn't she a former governor of Texas?
It looks like the mayor on South Park!

8. That avatar
is former Governor Ann Richards of Texas. Off topic, but when BushCo ran against her, Rove accused her of using *gasp* cocaine! How's that for hypocrisy?

9. I always enjoy hearing her speak. She's got great spirit. I had forgotten
her name. I don't expect anything BUT hypocrisy from BushCo :-(

5. not necessarily
Her husband was appointed guardian by the court.
Terri's parents did not object to his appointment.

Courts certainly can and do appoint life partners as guardians. Maybe not in Florida, but certainly in CA, MA, MN . . .

However, if parents or other family objected, courts are indeed less likely to give the deference to life partner that is given to spouse.

7. A Matter Of Custody
Your 100% correct and this point gets so trounced by the sensationalism of this fiasco.

First, when Terri Schiavo said "I Do", her husband, by their marriage covenant, was obligated to "protect her in sickness and health" or some line...and since she is over 21, her parents have no rights to speak for her unless she put it in a living will. So much for the sanctity of marriage.

This case has been around so long that if there was neglegence or some court felt her parents were acting in her best interest rather than her husband, we would have had some kind of ruling to say so. None exists.

The implications of this case on civil law could be devestating...now that a precedence has been set where the federal can step into state civil cases, there's not a divorce settlement, child custody, estate or other matter that can't be intruded on by outsiders. Shameless hypocrisy from the party of "family values" and "states rights".

Yes, this would have been a non-story if Terri Schiavo had been

- A Lesbian
- Black
- Hispanic
- Moslem
- "Librul"
- Agnostic/Athesitic/NOTA
- In A Blue State

This is abortion politics by the most hypocritical and mean-spirited people in this country. The fact they're given so much room to speak their venom without it being unchallenged is the long-lasting damage here.
