Letter: Republicans show true colors Sunday, March 20, 2005
The Republican White House and Congress are showing their true colors now that the Democrats are in the minority in the House and Senate. This week they are pushing through a budget before critics and the media can point out the huge program cuts and corporate giveaways.
The budget will give the wealthiest Americans permanent tax cuts while in the same breath cutting Medicaid for the states, VA benefits and food stamps for the poor. When the cuts to farm subsidies were kited by the White House, the Republican Congress stated they wanted to keep them but cut food stamps for the poor, most of whom are children. The Medicaid cuts will severely harm the poorest workers, and the senior citizens who rely on Medicaid for nursing home coverage once they are too sick and poor to stay at home.
The budget also slashes out money for the much heralded "No Child Left Behind" and funds to help moderate income Americans send their children to college. Pell grants are dramatically cut in the budget.
Added to all the reverse Robin-Hoodism is the new bankruptcy law which is payback to the credit card companies for their huge campaign contributions to the Republicans. The people who this will most impact are those bankrupted by a major illness. It also impacts serving National Guard troops who are trying to keep up mortgage payments on a substantially lower salary from the military than they were on at home Nice way to treat our men over there.
