Would you keep this person alive?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 02:01 AM by Quixote1818
I once watched a twilight zone that was based on a true story where their was this soldier who had his legs and arms blown off and his face blown off. He was blind, deaf could not taste and could not move, could not smell. His mind was totally their though. He did have one stub of an arm that he could move. If I remember corectly the politicians and others were fighting to keep him alive.

Now just imagine, all he could do is stare into blackness and not relate to anyone in ANY way! Can you imagine the dark, depressed, hopeless thoughts he would have day after day, night after night, year after year?

The episode ended when someone determined he could use his stub to do mores code. Everyone sat and watched with great interest as to what he would say. Guess what he typed out over and over?

KILL ME, KILL ME, KILL ME, KILL ME, KILL ME, KILL ME!!!!!!!!!

He nodded his head up and down for the Morse Code.

They shuffled him off to a darkened room after they realised what he was saying.

18. i thought of Johnny got his gun too
what a book! i remember how horrified my friends and i were when we read it (probably around 1970)

i just did a search on imdb.com and there was a film of this book made in 1971; donald sutherland played christ, timothy bottoms played joe and according to the posters on the site, metallica owns the rights to the movie and used clips of it in one of their videos.

i wonder if there is any way to find a copy of this...maybe amazon (tho i hear amazon donates mostly republican)

and remember the book being a campus favorite in the 60s and 70s. Just didn't know if the Twilight Zone had tackled that one, as the OP had recalled.

Subject matter would've been too intense for sixties television, though it was exactly the sort of thing Rod Serling would've loved to do, if he could get away with it.

17. First thing I taught my son when he got some Walkie-Talkies as a
gift.

Of course, it was the first thing I was taught, too, by my Marine drill instructor grandfather who was, erm, supposed to never have children since he was "paralysed" from the waist down, married his nurse - my grandma - and they OBVIOUSLY had children, my mother. ;)

6. Yes, I saw it and it was chilling
In our insane efforts to try to rationalize why we send people off to death and injury for faulty national security purposes, we think there is some humanity in keeping the injured alive. There isn't. Just because we have the technology to do so does not make it moral.

Keeping shells alive to make ourselves feel better, is at the least selfish.

9. Metallica - "One"
Great song, even better video.

It was based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo.

That's what you're thinking of.

It's fairly obscure though. I was able to rent it around the time the Metallic video was out, but I haven't seen it available lately.

I was a 14-year-old girl living in suburbia and I STILL recalled it, immediately upon reading the OP's post.

I wish I could have seen that movie - didn't think to rent something like that at the time.

I'll try to find it.

21. Here's the lyrics
I can’t remember anything
Can’t tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I’m waking up I can not see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me

Back in the womb it’s much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can’t look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I’ll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Now the world is gone I’m just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell
