The hornet's nest that has been kicked by the religiously insane
Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 08:35 PM by Walt Starr
They didn't want this to be brought up, but now they've forced the issue.

Euthanasia.

Yep, if the only way to die with dignity is to starve and die of dehydration, more and more people might be convinced that ending a life with expedience under dire circumstances is acceptable and should be legal!

1. My post "Euthanasia a money thing"
quickly sank to the bottom. My point is should a person be allowed to die a legal death by choice or is it best to keep one alive until at least all of one's assets are gone?

Off you go.

If I was in this person's apparent state, (let me qualify, I've not seen all, nor have any of us), I would not want to be kept alive on a tube, let me go.

Thank you, and I hope I did not misread your post.

on edit:
I forgot the not! How stupid!

5. Could be.
Where do you draw the line between euthanasia and DNR (do not resuscitate)? At what point does a patient (or family) make the decision that enough is enough?

My mother is slowly dying from a strange lung-disease. They do not know what's causing it, and there is no cure. She has an advanced medical directive, and her hospital records are DNR. When she checks in, they put a pink bracelet on her arm. She will not be intubated.

Are these "pro-life" people going to try to rob my mother of her right to die with dignity? What about cancer patients? What about those who refuse surgery?

I am so disturbed by the politicization of this issue - it frightens me.

6. Walt Starr, I'm just offering one person's opinion, but --
-- I think you are absolutely right that recent events will force the debate.

Your post elevated it for me, because now I can frame the subject when confronted by far-right folks.

I'm not at all surprised that you offered another of your invariably insightful posts, but please accept my thanks for the timeliness of this one.

7. I can't write anymore r/t this subject, but ...
... I will definitely incorporate the phrase "the religiously insane" into my conversation , it is far more concise than the right wing Christian fundamentalists. It also covers the crazies of all faiths.
