With Bush seemingly doing everything within his power to ensure a GREATER proliferation of nuclear weapons and a greater number of people willing to use them on us, I have no doubt what this administrations' reaction will be if one were to be detonated in the U.S. They'd react the same way Putin did after the terrorist attack in school, and the same way Bush did after 9/11: use the tragedy not to make the country safer, but to dismantle democracy further to consoldiate their power.
What should the position of sane-thinking people be if another 9/11 (or worse) occurs? I fear this hypothetical (but increasingly likely) situation will put the reality-based community in another bind, where any action they take to preserve the last bastions of democracy will be seen as un-patriotic or appeasing the enemy as opposed to saving the country.
It may very well be that there is nothing we can do at that point. This administration is very adept at manipulating people by their fears and desire for revenge, and people would again rally behind the only leader we have. It may sound fatalistic, but I fear everything I love about this country will cease to exist if the worst-case scenario were to occur, and the damage power-hungry politicians do for personal gain will make the blast of a nuclear bomb pale in comparison.
