Here is a good example of how effective using torture is

Murders of women rising in Mexican border city

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - The number of murders of women in a Mexican city on the U.S. border are rising, despite a government crackdown to end an 11-year spree that has killed more than 340
females.

The victims have been beaten and strangled in Ciudad Juarez, just south of El Paso, Texas, in a string of murders that has provoked outrage in Mexico and abroad. About a third of the victims were
sexually assaulted. snip

Despite the appointment of a special prosecutor last year, officials said on Tuesday eight women had been killed in the industrial city since January 1 -- a four-fold rise on the number of cases
reported in the same period last year. snip

Claudia Banuelos, a spokeswoman for the state prosecutor's office, said the recent jump in murders was "worrying." But she declined to comment on possible reasons for the spike, which came despite the
jailing of 11 men in two high-profile trials in recent months.

Analysts and women's groups in the city said some of the convictions were obtained from confessions under torture, leaving the real criminals at large to continue preying on women across the
city.

I would say the Mexican government is nothing but a bunch of barbaric fucking assholes. And I would not go there for a vacation even if it was free.

5. Mexico's a fine country, but has some problems.
On immigration threads, people ask why Mexicans don't "just overthrow" the regime that makes living in their country so hard they prefer to flee North. The current president is the first one from a party other than the one left in power after the 1910-1920 "Revolution" that turned into a bloody Civil War. We haven't forgotten the Kent State Shootings in which 4 protesters died; Mexican's remember the Tlatelolco Massacre--200 to 300 protesters were shot dead in 1968. (This link shows US Government connivance: www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB10/intro.htm )

Mexican police have never had a problem using torture. And, no, it often doesnt' work. The killings in Juarez are a continuing scandal.

9. ...torture. And, no, it "often" doesn't work. ???
Can you provide an example where it has worked? Thanks in advance.

And Mexico may be a fine country but it is being run by a bunch of assholes if torture is used to gain false confessions.

12. Ask someone else.
I did not come on this thread as an apologist for torture. Too bad if my word choices offended you.

3. Apparently they were torturing people who did follow the laws into
"confessing" whatever the corrupt officials there wanted them to "confess". Spanish Inquisition style.

15. Refraining from torturing = coddling?
You think their M.O. described in the post is all right?

This phrase - "not coddling anybody" - bothers me a lot. It is the same phrase (in Portuguese of course) the military dictatorship thugs used here in Brazil to defend their abuse of prisoners. It usually signals a specific mindset.

6. Torture is very good at getting people to agree with what you think
But I don't know how good it is if your preconcieved notion turns out to be false.

7. It's scary that the murders are rising in spite of the arrests.
Makes you wonder whether those arrested were even guilty .... or how many copycats are out there.
