6. I think the universities have a lot of power in this

There are bad forces inside, true, but the majority of academia benefits greatly from tenure. You could not sell an end to tenure to any academic senate I can imagine. You could threaten to cut off funds, but the countersuit capabilities of your foe would be impressive to say the least. In the long run, I think universities will A) stay liberally biased as long as they teach the truth, because the truth turns people into liberals; and B) keep giving tenure for as long as they exist, because no one would suffer the ordeal of getting a PhD. without the lure of eventually having it. Tenure is SUPPOSED TO BE, but mostly IS NOT, used as a tool for political activism by professors.

Even if tenure was abolished the Feds couldn't order any of the colleges they fund to fire anyone. Tenure can be practiced formally or informally.

So I think universities will basically remain as they are UNTIL truth itself is abolished by law (which I don't believe is at all farfetched), or until the degree system as we know it bears absolutely no relation to work or social standing (which is also the trend in reality right now). When one or the other of these conditions is fully achieved, we will have the military academies, business and technical schools the Republicans want, with "merit-based" "instructors" instead of faculty. And yes, right wing propaganda will be taught as curriculum, and you can bet that UNLIKE UNDER THE CURRENT "LIBERAL" REGIME students will fail if they do not reproduce the propaganda.

Sorry, I'm a grad student (soon to be finished) and this issue really upsets me... I need to remind myself that they start squawking about it every ten years or so and nothing in particular changes.
