Political Compass: Test How Liberal You Are
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 01:41 PM by JackD76
There is this great quiz out there that tells where you are on the political spectrum both economically and socially. It only takes a few minuets and it is a great way to figure out who you are politically.

When it give you your results, here is how you read them.

There are two scales. Anything that is -10 to -1 is liberal and anything that is +1 to +10 is conservative. The higher the number in each direction, the more extreme you are. Zero is moderate or neutral. For example, my results look like this.

-1.44 Socially
-2.75 Economically

That means that I am a very moderate liberal, in both respects.

One word of advice i have is to really examine and think about each question before you answer, to see how you really feel about it. Don't just answer questions that go along with the democrat's way of thinking.
Here is the link, have fun.

12. You can favor both
It's called libertarian socialism and it has nothing to do with the American Libertarian Party, who've hijacked and ruined the word. In Europe, where this poll originates, libertarian has a very different meaning.

I'm on the left and stand for social principles, yes. But I think that centralism and hierarchy have their proper place--discipline is necessary as is freedom.

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.90, which puts me right in line with Gandhi; a Left leaning Social Libertarian.

This questionnaire is interesting in that the questions are a good way to look at one's position on an issue; to help one to really examine how one feels about something.

Cool, thank you.

slightly further from the centre than I was last year, I think. Must be hanging around DU ;-)

Though they don't have it up now, they used to have a graph for the UK party leaders. Charles Kennedy was at least in the 'DU' quadrant (about -1/-2, I think), though his party now shows up further right economically (it's true that many are more enthusiastic about private provision of services than he is; though they're still to the left of New Labour).

So socially conservative? :P

I distrust these kinds of tests. Many of the questions were falsely dichotomous, and some were hypothetical enough to not have any real-world application. What about questions about which I had no real opinion one way or another? Still, fun to play around with.

72. I actually don't think its such a brilliant test
because the authoritarian axis doesn't really work for me - OK, so I think drugs should be legalised and don't have a problem with abortion or homosexuality etc., but then I also think freedom of speech should be restricted in some cases, private enterprise should be restricted, people should be shot for treason, violence is justifiable in a revolutionary context etc. - that's not just being left economically, that's also being authoritarian (or at the very least, its something other than liberal). For example, it asks the question:

'Should any broadcasting stations recieve public funding'

which is ok, but nowhere does it ask the opposite:

'Should any privately-funded news media be allowed?'

and there are other similar examples.

I think this test doesn't really cater for Marxists for this reason. I should certainly be more neutral than liberal on the vertical axis, but in fact I score a -6.5. Not that I mind being labeled more liberal than Nelson Mandela, but its not realistic. Having said all that, its porbably still the best of its kind. Maybe it just needs a third axis? Hmm...
