HBO Carnivale - is it joining the BFEE propaganda?
A mystical kinda show, confrontation good and evil during the depression. Evil preacher lends his demonic power to a politician's campaign. As his followers zombie-like put on buttons, one says: "You are a Democrat now"
Next scene shows a sign: "Lincoln Highway"

2. Been mine too. That's why it bothers me so much.
Does it make sense that Justin is supporting a democrat? And Lincoln Hway was actually the title - I initially missed it.

6. I didn't see the button you're talking about, but I heard the candidate
talk about how he hates the "Red New Deal", so whatever kind of Democrat he is, isn't a Rosseveltian Democrat

4. I heard that too
However when the gubernatorial candidate was making his speech he talked about not being the "red new deal candidate" but the people candidate. I think they are just mixing it up for story purposes. I think they are sort-of brave for showing the mindless followers of the false preacher the way they are.

Have to wait and see I guess.

7. I heard the New Deal reference too. I believe they got some artistic
direction from Gannon's office and are being..."objective". Like Bill Maher and Jon Stewart started - and the rest of the media got lost in it completely.

15. What are you implying, exactly?
that Dan Gannon and/or the White House is pressuring Daniel Knauf(the creator)to portray Democrats in a bad light? Come on. A century ago, the two parties were very different. Two presidents who are admired today among some on the left are Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, both Republicans. On the other hand, notorious racist Strom Thurmond began his career as a Democrat. Things did not even begin to change until the Coolidge administration in the 1920's for the Republicans and the FDR administration for the Democrats. FDR's somewhat socialist policies were very much opposed by many old-style Democrats, especially in the South and in rural areas like where Brother Justin lives. Of course during that time, people who felt that way still voted for the Democrats, at least locally. It did not fully change over until Nixon's Southern strategy of the late 60's.

5. No way, no way at all robbed voter! The preacher is Bush!
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 11:16 PM by autorank
Father Justin Crow is Bush, the oddly charismatic leader leading the suckers (the Republicans) on a faith-based mission for God when in fact, Father Justin is really sent by the Devil. Tonight's episode show this when Father Jusitn had a right-wing candidate at his tent service. Ben Hawkins (the loner healer) is the embodiment of the healing power of the "good people" and his peers, the Carnies. They, like us, are the lost American's wandering the desert of our current political landscape.

The show is a metaphor! The writers take this theme and use it to talk about just how ugly things are. It's a technique developed by Brecht (used to fight the Nazi's) called alienation...you present today's story in an format alien to the public allowing the public to bypass it's prejudices and understand the message.

Bush

Wes & Grit

The “little people” (us)

8. I got the impression that the Sermon on the Mount Americans
were Republicans. I thought it was very much a dig at the present day Republicans. The Democrats seem to be having a different campaign. I did find it confusing.

11. View it in its "historical" context...
...depression era, there were many racist, corrupt politicians who supported nazi anti-semitism and hatred, from both political parties...

14. In the South
For decades, Democrat meant racist. Things change.

Let's not put too much into this.

As for Lincoln Highway, it's the main highway in those parts.

19. Actually it needs to be viewed in a more "tin foil" hat type conspiracy
nut basis, going back many years before the depression era. There are many references to the "masons". Yes it is a good and evil theme. Read up on it. It is pretty damned historical, therefore, rather frightening and very dark.

22. I can't deal with that show...too weird
But are you complaning that they are portraying Democrats in the 30s as racists?

Well, most Democrats in the South in the 30s were racists. Have you ever wondered why it took Republicans 140 years to win the governorship of Mississippi?

24. Carnivale has nothing to do with current politics, just as
LOTR didn't.

Enjoy the show for what it is. There's no need to ruin it by attaching political agendas to it.
