Italian govt. now warning freed hostage to "be cautious in her accounts"
"Be careful what you say." - Ari Fleischer

.... An Italian Cabinet member urged Sgrena, who writes for a communist newspaper that routinely opposes U.S. policy in Iraq, to be cautious in her accounts and said the shooting would not affect Italy's support for the Bush administration.

The White House called the shooting a "horrific accident" and restated its promise to investigate fully.

Without backing up the claim, the 56-year-old journalist said she believed it was possible she was targeted because the United States objected to methods used to secure her release.

"The fact that the Americans don't want negotiations to free the hostages is known," she told Sky TG24 television by telephone, her voice hoarse and shaky. "The fact that they do everything to prevent the adoption of this practice to save the lives of people held hostage, everybody knows that. So I don't see why I should rule out that I could have been the target."

7. I like how the AP reporter says "without backing up the claim"....
Gee has AP written the same about WMD claims? Social Security is in the tubes claims? ANY claims Bush makes?

Fascinating journalistic phrase there, Angela Doland of AP.

"Stuff it where the Italian sun doesn't shine, you fascist pig."

If he needs an elaboration, she can suggest that if he still believes that the Bush policy in Iraq is worthy of support, he should grab a shovel, catch the next plane to Baghdad and start digging for Saddam's lost biochemical arsenal.

16. The now cannot find the bullet riddle car.
No one will accept the DOD version of any investigation. It is akin to foxes investigating hen house murders.

The family of the slain man and the injured reporter should file a law suit.

17. Elections, dammit, elections! WHEN are the elections in Italy?
This year? Next year? 2007?

ANYBODY know? When is Berlusconi going to next face the ballots? (Yes, I know it's a parliamentary system. He'll get ousted by people not voting for representatives from his party/coalition.)

19. Here's some nasty little sentiment from the yahoo article
Without backing up the claim, Sgrena said she believed it was possible she was targeted because the United States objected to methods used to secure her release.

<snip>

Communications Minister Maurizio Gasparri urged Sgrena to be more careful about what she said.

"I understand the emotion of these hours, but those who have been under stress in the past few weeks should pull themselves together and avoid saying nonsense," ANSA quoted Gasparri as saying.

Gasparri also said the shooting would not affect Italian support for efforts to secure postwar Iraq. "The military mission must carry on because it consolidates democracy and liberty in Iraq," he said.

This is totally FUBAR. Mussolini must be dancing in his grave.

22. I am counting on the Italian people
They overwhelmingly oppose the deployment of their troops to Iraq. I hope this incident radicalizes the moderates to demand an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

23. It's hard to say it much nastier than this Minister has, but he's saying:
"She's lost her mind. Pay no attention to her."

I'd like to see AP use that slimy, weasly qualifier with *. For example:

Without backing up his claim, the President said the murder was a horrible mistake.

29. It certainly does
How did the U.S. military almost immediately "lose" such a vital piece of evidence? Very fishy indeed.

As was pointed out on another thread by alfredo, the car would indicate if the bullets were fired at the engine block (as the original military version stated) or at the side windows or rear of the vehicle.

26. Your son is fed daily propaganda from his military superiors
I experienced the same crap when I was in uniform, except that I didn't believe a word of what we were told, particularly the part about bringing freedom.

Americans are sadly misinformed about the world. This is partly the fault of our educational system which is geared to train us to be obedient consumers rather than critical thinkers. Our freedom of the press is a joke! The only freedom is the freedom of the corporations to issue press releases disguised as journalism.

31. What WMDs? That story went down the memory hole!
The "current" story is that we invaded Iraq to bring freedom and democracy to the Middle East. Keep waiving those flags and keep those magnetic "Support the Troops" ribbons on your car, or else Homeland Security will take an interest in you.

God is with us!

But The Guardian mentions in their story that he survived. Perhaps your sources aren't as reliable as you think.
